Ulf Samuelsson | A real disgrace to hockey. Ended Cam Neely's career with his dirty hit. Hid behind a faceguard and turtled whenever he was challenged.
| 2 | Dale Hunter | Cheap-shot artist. His hit on Pierre Turgeon was so late you could have made an omelet between the goal and his gutless assault
|
Rick Jodzio | His attack on Tardif was criminal. He just snapped and tried to kill him. It was a shame because he was an accomplished fighter who could really handle himself with his fists.
Steve Durbano | A real thug. His vicious hit on Bobby Hull was one of the worst cheap shots I've ever seen. A sad waste of talent and toughness.
Dave Schultz | Attacked too many non-fighters like Borje Salming and Rick Middleton. Was an excellent fighter, but did have some bad defeats. Was soundly thrashed by Battleship Kelly, Gillies, Robinson, and Ken Houston.
Todd Bertuzzi | Attack on Steve Moore was gutless. Overrated wrestler. Seldom fights the top guns of the league.
Matt Cooke | Real piece of garbage. Ruined Marc Savard's career with a cheap shot. Loved when Evander Kane knocked him senseless.
Bobby Clarke | An all-time great hockey player, but a dirty stick-mongerer who couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag. A miserable rotten person. His comments about Roger Neilson and Eric Lindros revealed his nasty side.
Andre Dupont | An overrated wrestler. Couldn't stand up against legitimate NHL enforcers. Not a great fighter by any means. Did save Dave Schultz from a certain kayo at the hands of Clark Gillies. Deserves credit for sticking up for his teammates.
Dave Semenko | He was a real dirty player. He was getting pounded by Tim Hunter and kneed him in the face. That being said, he was one of the best fighters of his era.
Glen Cochrane | He had the temperment of a pit bull with rabies. Could sucker punch and cheap shot with the best of them. His attack on Ron Duguay was classless. He was a great fighter and power puncher.
Gord Gallant | One of the most notorious hitmen of the WHA. Part of the three worst goon squads in the history of the league with the Minnesota Fighting Saints, Quebec Nordiques, and Birmingham Bulls. Went ballistic during the Jodzio brawl of 1976. Kneed a Calgary Cowboy in the face while cops tried to break up the on-ice riot.
Tie Domi | A knuckle-dragging Neanderthal who had no conscience. One of the dirtiest cretins to ever play in the NHL. At the same time, a truly great fighter. One of the pound-for-pound best.
| 14 | Marty McSorley | His attack on Donald Brashear was inexcusable. I guess he was tired of getting beat up again and again so he had to respond with the mother of all cheap shots.
An excellent fighter, but somewhat overrated. Not the unbeatable beast he was made out to be by the media. |
Chris Nilan | I'll never forget his vicious stick-mongering on Rick Middleton. An excellent fighter, but overrated. Reached new heights in the art of thuggery.
Ken Linseman | One of the most gutless pukes in the history of professional hockey. His abilities to instigate trouble were unmatched. Could carve opponents with his stick like a Thanksgiving turkey. Was attacked by Randy Holt, Russ Anderson, and famously by Chris Nilan in the runway at Boston Garden. I loved when Ron Duguay smushed his face into the ice during a game.
Dan Maloney | His blidside hit on Brian Glennie was a real black eye for the game. He was a good fighter, but couldn't be found in the same zip code as Battleship Kelly. Had the distinction of getting pulverized by Gil Perreault.
Jerry Korab | Overrated as a fighter. Had the living piss beat out of him by Garry Unger. This had to be one of the greatest upsets in NHL history.
Ken Dryden | Pompous, condescending moralizer with a holier-than-thou attitude who is on a crusade to eliminate fighting from hockey. Wants to turn the NHL into a self-esteem workshop or Disney on Ice.
Paul Baxter | A cheap-shot artist and overall trouble maker on the ice. Goaded the mild-mannered Blaine Stoughton into attacking him with his stick. A real piece of garbage.
Ed Hospodar | He was a cheap-shot artist without a conscience. He deserved what he got when Clark Gillies knocked his teeth out.
Sean Hill | This guy was a gutless puke who would throw cheap shots and turtle behind the visor. He couldn't beat up my grandmother.
Billy Tibbetts | A rapist who is a piece of garbage.
Bill Goldthorpe | Overrated middleweight who built up a reputation because he inspired the development of a character in Slap Shot. Growing a gold Afro doesn't make you a good fighter.
Frank Beaton | One of the thugs on the Birmingham Bulls goon squad. He got hammered against Mel Bridgman once he joined the NHL. An overrated middleweight. This guy wasn't so brave once he wasn't on the ice with Bilodeau and Beaudoin.
Gilles Bilodeau | "Bad News" could really fight. He was one of the best fighters in the WHA. He was a brutal player without a conscience who terrorized the opposition.
Dave Hanson | He was an overrated thug who got dropped by Jimmy Mann with one punch. His reputation was built up because of his association with the movie Slap Shot.
Randy Holt | He was a ruthless and brutal player who would deliberately try to injure guys. To his credit, he was a good fighter who would back up his play with his fists.
Jack O'Callahan | Sucker-punching punk who got his butt kicked with regularity. Once went on a cheap shot rampage in a college brawl during his time at Boston University. Bit Ron Friest in a fight. Fought dirty with frequency, but was pathetic in fair fights.
Robert Picard | He was a wanna-be tough guy who chickened out of fights with Bob Kelly and Jack McIlhargey. He targeted smaller players and non-fighters and avoided meaningful exchanges with the good fighters in the NHL.
Paul Holmgren | An excellent fighter. I can't stand him because he was always running guys, getting his stick up, and resorting to dirty tactics. He had some trouble with big heavyweights early in his career, but became a good tactician that was difficult to beat in the early 1980's.
Ted Bulley | A wrestler who avoided meaningful hand-to-hand combat whenever possible.
Jimmy Mann | A good fighter in his early years. His skills eroded quickly and he was notorious for cheap shots and sucker punches. I did love when he flattened Paul Gardner after Gardner deliberately targeted the injured jaw of Doug Smail.
Brian Boyle | A big softie who has looked pathetic in every fight I have seen.
Keith Crowder | A Greco-Roman grappler who usually tried to wrestle his opponent to the ice as soon as he could. I hate putting a Bruin on this list, but he sucked as a fighter.
Dan Mandich | Boring wrestler who was rarely in a decent bout.
Don Saleski | He was a fake tough guy. His antics were hollow and usually only administered when Schultz or Kelly were on the scene to protect him if things got out of hand.
Frank Bathe | He was a fake tough guy who wrestled a lot and bailed out of meaningful combat situations far too often.
Dan Cloutier | He went around like he was King Kong, but never faced a legitimate NHL tough guy. His challenge of the Islanders bench following his brutal beating of Tommy Salo was one of the worst cases of false bravado I have ever seen. No one was going to take a ten game suspension to go after this gutless puke.
Scott Stevens | Maybe the best hitter of all time. Also, a good underrated fighter. I didn't like how he could ruin a man's livelihood with a borderline hit and not lose a bit of sleep over it. Didn't care about the collateral damage his style of play caused.
Dave Brown | He was an all time great fighter, but he suckered a lot of guys. His hit on Tomas Sandstrom was a brutal attempt to injure. There were too many of these type of incidents for my liking.
