Feb 14, 2012 11:09 ET | During the 1972 Summit series between Canada and the Soviet Union, Team Canada made a stop in Sweden to play two exhibiton games. Trailing 2 to 1 in the Summit series when these exhibitions took place, Canada was already a frustrated team. Add to that the gruesome injury suffered by Wayne Cashman when he was speared in the mouth in the first exhibition against Sweden, and things are at a boiling point. Vic Hadfield gets checked into the boards and roughed up a little late in the third period. Hadfield comes off the boards and makes a beeline for the front of the net. There he meets Swedish captain Lars-Erik Sjoberg, a future WHA and NHLer with the Winnipeg Jets. Hadfield crosschecks Sjoberg across the face, breaking his nose and leaving the latter a bloody mess. Hadfield is taken to the penalty box with a five-minute major for high-sticking while Sjoberg stands up, skates a few circles, and heads for the tunnel, which is at the end of the rink behind the goal. Feb 14, 2012 11:00 ET | Hadfield recieved a five-minute major for high sticking, Sjoberg had a badly broken nose. Canada scored the tying goal with under a minute to go in the game while shorthanded due to this penalty. Starts around 8:24 of this clip:
