Joey Kocur narrow win Fun
8
I have both parts of this preseason fight between Pittsburgh's Marty McSorley and Joey Kocur of the New York Rangers. The live feed from MSG only has the second half of the confrontation. I have a sit-down interview with Kocur (conducted by MSG's Bob Page) where they show the first half of this major heavyweight battle.

There is a gathering of Rangers and Penguins after a whistle. Several players gather around and do some shoving. McSorley and Kocur look interested in going at it, but the linesmen get in their way. One of the officials grabs Kocur (who is sporting a nasty black eye, a result of getting popped by the Islanders' Bob McGill two nights previously). McSorley looks at Kocur and shrugs, as if to say, "I'm ready when you are."

Kocur and McSorley are getting sent to the penalty boxes for two minutes apiece. As they are being led away to the sin bins, they break away from the officials and drop the gloves.

Kocur is all over McSorley in the first part, working him over good with some big rights. Kocur lands a monster uppercut that straightens out McSorley, who had been hunched over. The MSG commentators (John Davidson and Sam Rosen) knew they weren't on the air during this part; when the huge uppercut landed, Davidson exclaimed, "Oh, JESUS!" It was pretty funny to hear that.

Somehow, McSorley weathered the blows and came back. This is when the MSG broadcast cut back in. McSorley was firing the right hands as Kocur held on. McSorley was punching away with no answer from Kocur, but he didn't land quite as well as Joey did in the first part of the scrap. After the combatants get wrapped up and begin wrestling, the linesmen intervene. While standing face to face, Joey and Marty have some unpleasant words for each other.

Overall, it's a slight edge to Kocur for landing the better punches in the first half of the fight, but give some kudos to Marty for being able to come back and nearly even it up in the second half.

Kocur and McSorley at first get sent to the penalty boxes, then get sent to their dressing rooms when they draw additional misconducts (probably for breaking away from the linesmen to start the fight). Kocur skates by the Pittsburgh bench, where he has a verbal confrontation with Ulf Samuelsson.

I also saw the beginning of this fight. Kocur landed a huge uppercut and some more rights in the early going, McSorley came back, but his punches clearly were not as hard as Kocur's. Great fight, edge Kocur.

Kocur early, McSorley late. Kocur lands a big uppercut for the edge.

I agree with Mullet. Kocur does land way better early on in the fight. Who ever put the win for McSorley, obviously hasn't seen the whole fight.Reply

Unfortunately that youtube video only shows the second part of the fight and doesn't show Kocur landing some bombs on MartyReply

JimMcKenzie, re, and EddieShore's reviews should be removed. None of them have seen the entire fight and have made erroneous calls.
Mullet and Anthony19 have it right.

After the Joey Kocur-Marty McSorley fight is broken up, both tough guys get sent to their respective dressing rooms.

As Joey skates by the Pittsburgh bench, he has some words with Ulf Samuelsson. The Ranger heavyweight is standing in the walkway between the two benches, and Samuelsson is at the end of the Pittsburgh bench near this walkway. Samuelsson is talking plenty of trash to Kocur, but you can't make out what he's saying. Kocur yells to Ulfie, "Take the mask off!", referring to Ulfie's visor and his penchant for hiding behind it.

It looks like Kocur wants to go after Samuelsson, as he takes some steps in Ulf's direction. However, a linesman and some security guards make sure Kocur and Samuelsson stay separated. Kocur goes to the dressing room without further incident.

(When Tie Domi suckered Ulfie two years later, Kocur and Samuelsson were teammates at the time, but I'm willing to bet Joey was secretly happy about Ulfie getting his block knocked off.)

Rick Tocchet narrow win Fun
3
Mike Hartman and Rick Tocchet get into a scrap at center ice, this fight being the undercard after the excellent bout between Joey Kocur and Marty McSorley. The two men drop the gloves right off a faceoff. They come together and Tocchet lands a right. Hartman lands a glancing blow off Tocchet's helmet. Tocchet removes Hartman's helmet and gets a short left in. Hartman just stays in tight with Tocchet and both men land a noogie while in close. The two open up and Hartman goes with his left. He fails to connect but Tocchet catches Hartman with a solid shot. Hartman goes to the ice ending the fight.

This looked to be a TKO win for Tocchet but since I'm not 100% sure of that, I decided against calling this a TKO win for Tocchet. Nevertheless Tocchet still gets the win for landing more punches which were harder than Hartman's blows as well.

Good match-up but they are too close and tied up to get it going. Not a good fight.

Boring grapplefest. Tocchet might have landed a right in the end just before Hartman went down.

Off the faceoff they begin grappling away not landing much except for a few helmetshots but not for lack of trying with Tocchet maybe slightly more active in trying to loosen his right tho Hartman seems to connect with a short sneaky left jab or two from under but it's hard to see for sure as they spin around and soon go down with Hartman pulling Tocchet to the ice next to him quite violently. Draw in a short fight missing the landing fists but not some intensity.

They begin to grapple at center ice. Hartman stretches well enough to land 1 good facial-punch. Towards the end of the match, Tocchet may or may not have landed a head-punch but the momentum of that swing sends both players down to the ice. I'll play it safe and just call this a draw.

This one could be better classified as a "collision". They both lined each other up and ran into each other; there was no "victim" or "aggressor".Reply
