Pittsburgh superstar Evgeni Malkin gives Buffalo forward Johan Larsson a light whack with his stick as they skate up the ice. Larsson responds by nudging Malkin as he lightly bumps the Penguin. Malkin takes exception to this and he goes after Larsson. Malkin drops his gloves as does Larsson who loses his helmet. Larsson ducks away and doesn't even look at Malkin. Malkin also makes no effort to throw any punches despite initiating the confrontation. In a rare occurrence, the officials actually stay out and give them time to settle their differences. However, after 10 seconds of nothing but grappling, they decide to intervene.

I'm calling this a rough. Both men dropped the gloves but did absolutely nothing other than hang onto each other. They both had plenty of time to attempt to throw punches but the two men literally just stood there and held onto each other. Since neither man really had an intent to fight, I believe a rough is the correct call. Just because two players drop the gloves and grab each other doesn't necessarily mean it was a fight and this little incident is a good example of that.

What a lackluster and pathetic event this was. Malkin was the aggressor and went after Larsson yet he made no effort to try and throw any punches. Larsson dropped his mitts too and he had the opportunity to fight one of the Pittsburgh stars (a rare occurrence) but instead he just stood there and turned his head away. I thought both men embarrassed themselves here. Malkin tried to act tough but did nothing after forcing the issue and Larsson looked like he wanted no part of Malkin who isn't exactly a tough player. What a letdown. I got excited for all of two seconds when I saw two players dropping the gloves but as is often the case in most NHL games these days, nothing came of it.

Down 4-0 in the third period the Sabres make a play into the Penguins end and get a shot from the point off which ends up in the corner, Evgeni Malkin goes to play it and takes a hit from Ristolainen, Malkin skates up the ice and comes into contact with Johan Larsson and both guys give each other some shots before they get the gloves off, too bad neither looked too enthusiastic about throwing any punches as they pretty much just held onto each other and the Linesmen seperate them. Fun

Players are so used to the refs jumping right in. These two pretenders got exposed in this pathetic altercation. If the refs just stayed out of it always, you wouldn't see guys like Malkin and Larsson trying to start shit and get bailed out like always.Reply
