Shawn Thornton narrow win Fun
6
Kassian and Thornton line up side by side waiting for a center ice faceoff. When the puck is dropped, they shed the mitts and square off. They mutually engage but their heads appear to bump on the way in and Thornton stumbles backward. Kassian tosses a right to the helmet and a left jersey jab to the face. Another right misses as Thornton crouches down, his helmet dangling momentarily before it falls to the ice. Kassian reaches the back of Thornton's head with an overhand right. He tosses two more left jabs, landing the second to the face. Thornton leans away while Kassian misfires on three rights. The first of two Kassian left jabs lands to the face. Thornton straightens up and Kassian comes up short with an overhand right. Thornton throws an errant right and another Kassian right is short. Thornton tries to throw another right but is locked out. They clinch and move toward the middle of the ice. Kassian delivers four soft left uppercuts, landing three to the body. He pauses, then misses a left upstairs. They're in tight and Thornton lands a short left to the helmet. Thornton pushes at Kassian's helmet in a brief attempt to remove it but Kassian fends him off by actively throwing the right. He misses one outside of Thornton's left ear and lands a body shot. Another right is locked out and Thornton narrowly misses an inside right. Kassian, tiring at this point, grabs on again and gets in tight. Thornton connects with two short rights to the helmet and they wrestle. Kassian tosses a right uppercut to the body. Thornton connects to the face with a good hard right from underneath. They grapple again and one of the linesmen encroaches. Thornton appears to tell him to stand back and the fight continues. Thornton lands another right as the camera shifts to an unnecessary view of the Bruin bench. Three seconds later the fight is back in focus as Thornton fans on a big right. Kassian's short with another right and Thornton counters with one to the helmet. Kassian's right falls short again as does Thornton's. Two more rights by Thornton also fail to reach. Kassian loops a left over Thornton's head. Thornton lands two short crisp rights to the chin underneath. An overhand by Thornton glances off Kassian's helmet but another right uppercut lands solidly to the face. Kassian is gassed and though Thornton appears to have something left in the tank, the officials step in to separate the combatants. Thornton skates to the box with some apparent abrasions to the forehead.

Narrow win for Thornton. Kassian was aggressive at the beginning of the scrap, outpointing Thornton in the early going. Thornton weathered it though and came back strong. Kassian was taking deep breaths as the fight progressed and Thornton effectively scored with rights. It was a close fight and could be called a draw, I suppose, but it looked like Thornton landed the more effective punches. The damage to his forehead likely happened when he and Kassian's heads seemed to bump as they came together at the outset.

Kassian said that he hadn't ever been in a fight that lasted this long. It was actually a little surprising that the linesmen let it go as long as it did. Thornton seemed to persuasively prevent the officials from stopping it when it would have probably been a win for Kassian. It turned into an endurance contest which favored the veteran Thornton.

This was a great fight by both guys. Kassian is one of the top up and coming fighters, and he's got 35 lbs and a lot of height and reach on Shawn, but the veteran showed why he is one of the game's most respected enforcers.

Earlier in the game, Kassian had challenged Thornton, but Boston was badly outplaying Minnesota so Shawn declined and Boston had a great scoring chance just 7 seconds later.

This time, as both guys had been chirping after they came out for the 3rd period skate around.

The men discard their gloves and sticks and square off. Thornton came in with a right handed stance, but as they went in for the grab, he tried switching hands and grabbing on with the right, and Kassian used his strength to get a grip and pull Thornton towards his first couple of punches that sent Thorny's helmet hanging by the strap. He follows up with a couple of left sweater jabs, and 3 rights to the back of Thornton's head, but only 1 connected. He then throws 2 more jabs, as Thornton appears to regain his balance. As Kasian is loading up, Thornton is slickly sliding down his elbow pad, which he ejects just as he comes up to unload. The 2 men then rear back and start chucking big right hands, that both looked to come up short. Kassian pulls Thornton in tight, and Shawn wrestles for a better grip on Matt's sweater. Kassian then lands a weak left body shot, and appears to be tiring.
Thornton now pulls on the back of Kassian's sweater to tie his arms up, and then unsuccessfully tries to get the helmet off before landing a left jab himself. Matt throws several more punches that Thornton blocks, as Thornton throws 2 straight rights that find their mark.

Thornton then lands a left body shot, followed by a huge uppercut.

At this point, the linsemen look to break it up, but Thornton tells them to back off.
He lands another right cross, as Kassian responds with a right of his own, but it had nothing on it and it came up short.

Kassian then locks out Shawn's right, and his next 2 punches come up short. Kassian then fires a weak left that comes up short.

Thornton then lands another uppercut followed by a right cross, followed by another uppercut. Kassian is clearly out of gas, and his mouth is wide open as he is just hanging on. The linesmen jump in quickly and Thornton yells to the Boston bench to get his team going.

It was all Kassian early, but Thornton came back hard with his great technical skills. It is a solid draw in a very entertaining bout. If Matt improves his stamina, he could be a contender for the belt in a couple of years.

This was a good matchup between two excellent fighters. Kassian started out quickly in this bout. He got a good grip on Shawn's jersey and fired off right hands. His first three punches appeared to land and the third right was a good shot. He followed up with some decent jersey jabs that seemed to bother Thornton.

Thornton had trouble getting punches off in the beginning of the bout. Kassian landed a couple more partially connecting rights and jersey jabs. He was building up a good lead at this point in the fight. Thornton clinched and worked on establishing a better grip. He had some work to do to get a comeback going.

Both guys had some extended grappling and each landed a few weak partial connects. Thornton finally landed a good uppercut. It was a beauty and it snapped Kassian's head back. At this point, one of the officials looked like he was going to step in and stop the bout, but Thornton pleaded for more time and, fortunately for him, he bought more time to mount a comeback.

Shawn continued to land well in his late rally. He landed a good right cross. His follow up right appeared to land on Kassian's helmet and he shook his hand after the blow. Both guys were arm weary at this point, but Kassian looked really exhausted. Thornton landed one more decent uppercut to finish the fight on a strong note.

I would rate this fight as a draw. Kassian got off to a big lead and landed more punches in the bout. Thornton mounted a good comeback and landed four or five hard shots in his late rally. Shawn's punches seemed to land with a little more impact.

Thornton's face showed some welts after the bout, but this can often be deceptive. Some guys bruise and cut easily and Shawn has a light complexion. I remember some fights where Cam Neely looked like his face went through a wood-chipper, but he actually got the win or fought to a draw. We can only evaluate a fight based on the visible impact of the blows and shouldn't be overly influenced by the presence of blood. Some guys may have cuts from previous fights that haven't healed properly and this can often explain the visible evidence of damage on a fighter's face.

Overall, this was a very entertaining and action-packed bout. Kassian was handing Thornton his lunch in the early going. Shawn made a valiant comeback with his superior stamina. It was a mild surprise to me that he was able to even the scorecard in this marathon bout against a tough opponent.

Right off a draw early in the third period, rookie enforcer, Matt Kassian takes on veteran tough guy, Shawn Thornton. They square up and as they get a grip of each other's sweater, Thornton goes off balance and Kassian misses a right. Kassian throws eight consecutive rights afterwards but only lands one while jersey jabbing away which gives Thornton some balance troubles. Thornton also loses his helmet trying to duck away from the bigger Kassian. Once Thornton gets set, he misses a right and Kassian throws two rights back and connects with one. Kassian then gets in tight on Thornton and switches to the left as they wrestle around. Kassian throws five lefts in a row and lands two to the body while Thornton switches to the left as well. Thornton lands a left and Kassian switches back to the right and Thornton switches to the right as well while Kassian throws two rights and lands one. Then Thornton lands a right as Kassian misses a right and Kassian misses another right while staying in tight with Thornton. Thornton connects with a right and they keep wrestling while Kassian misses a right and puts his head down. Thornton then throws two rights and lands one while trying to stand back from Kassian but Kassian is able to keep in tight. Then Kassian misses a right before Thornton misses a right and Kassian misses a right again as Thornton stands back. Thornton three rights in a row and lands one while Kassian switches to the left. Kassian misses a left and tries to get back in tight while Thornton throws three consecutive rights and lands two. Thornton attempts to stand back again but the linesmen get in and separate the two. Thornton looks to his bench and tries to pump them up as they're down two goals while Kassian raises one arm tiredly to the crowd before entering the box. Thornton's forehead is marked up too after the fight. A fairly entertaining battle between Kassian and Thornton. Kassian was on the offensive early and Thornton took some time to get set and then to get going but Kassian got pretty tired as the fight went on and Thornton came back strong. Draw in a long tilt.

Great bout, the first half of the fight is all Kassian basically pummeling Thornton. Shawn couldn't get anything going until Kassian finally gassed out then he controlled the 2nd half of the fight with some absolute bombs, but kassian stayed in tight and prevented any real flurry by thornton. I want to give this a draw since thornton landed the best shots in this one, but kassians early domination gives him the nod.

Thornton vs. Kassian at center ice... Kassian was busy early but didn't land anything, Thornton took over the 2nd half of the fight and actually landed some punches to the face of Kassian. Thornton's forehead is all bruised and cut but I'm pretty sure that's from Kassian's helmet rubbing against it all fight from being so inclose.

Good long fight here, Thornton gives up 30+ pounds against a much bigger opponent, and a guy who doesn't lose many. Kassian started out strong throwing a lot of punches, didn't seem like too many landed. Thornton showed good balance after Kassian was throwing continuous punches and i believe that gassed out Kassian, then Thornton, with superior cardio took control landing a few shots in close, including a good uppercut that clearly caught Kassian. I think Thornton wins narrowly on points, though, it's a tough one to call.

Thornton goes to the box with some scrapes on his forehead from what i'm pretty sure was Kassian's helmet from the in-tight battling.

Off the face off at center ice, these guys drop the gloves and square up, Kassian starts out with the rights and gets Thorton facing the wrong way, they tie up for a bit and then kas tries some short lefts, they seem to fall short. Thorton lands a few towards the end then the linos jump in after a long bout. Narrow win Kassian

Momentum-shifting is the theme of this bout. They set up to square off. In the 1st-half of the bout, it was all-Kassian as he blazes through using his right & left fists at the same time. One fist was landing 2 facial/head-punches while at the same time, the other fist was landing 7 jersey-jabs > a double whammy on Thornton. The 2nd-half of the bout sees Kassian landing 1 short facial-punch at first. In the meantime, Thornton is seen buying time to rebound from Kassian's earlier punches and it helps him. He resurrects to land 2 facial-punches + 2 short-traveled facial-punches on Kassian while Kassian was out of gas. Hence, Thornton's rebounding makes this a draw to narrow win for Thornton.

Nice long fight between these two heavyweights. Kassian controls the early action, but give credit to Thornton for coming back the way he did. Overall, I'd give the narrowest of edges to Kassian, although one can argue that this may have been a dwar just as easily. Can't really see giving the edge to Thornton in this one.

Right off the start Kassian hands out the bigger punches and tags Thornton good more or less ragdolling him and then as they grapple he continues with some lefts to his body while Thronton struggles to answer but with only a couple of grazing rights toward the end for the slightest comeback but since this site is overrun by Boston homers I can only call this clear win a narrow one for Kassian.

Kassian looks to be the stronger man and throws a lot, but the much more technically skilled fighter is Thornton, who is able to defend and prevent any of Kassians shots to get through for any damage, and is able to counter with a couple of good shots, the best of the fight being a solid uppercut by Thornton. narrow win for Thornton, anyone calling this a Kassian win didn't watch very closely, watch in slow motion, all Kassian does is swing into Thornton's arm blocks, and Thornton waits for the opportunity and is effective with his openings

Kassian out punched Thornton about 4-1, that was a without question a win for kassian. Give Thornton props for hanging in after getting rocked but the bigger stonger man won that one.

Without question? I suggest you go back and watch the fight in slow motion on youtube. Kassian was punching air after landing the first shot. All he got after that was a bunch of jersey jabs. Thornton rocked him with 3 uppercuts and 2 right crosses.
I think it's a solid draw, but only because Kassian Bruised Thorny's forehead landing what was presumably the best punch early on.

How many times have your reviews been pulled because of that HUGE Boston bias you build up every time? 3? 4? Don't tell people how to review a fight when you have your reviews pulled every few months because you can't call a fight correctly.

I see that, it was a very close distinction I had trouble making, it certainly was not a Kassian win by any measure, but I could be happy going with either a draw or a narrow win for Thornton, I waffled a bit then chose to go with the draw to err on the side of even when in doubtReply
