Stan Jonathan narrow win Fun

Nilan got his stick up high on Craig MacTavish along the boards. Jonathan went right over and challenged Chris. Nilan accepted the challenge and it was on. Stan landed a solid right with his first punch. Chris appeared to land a partial connect and he landed a solid right of his own.

Jonathan landed a solid left and a decent blow. Nilan connected with a solid right and missed a punch. Stan landed a pretty good right, a solid connect, and a decent blow. Jonathan was switching hands effectively throughout the bout. Nilan was having trouble getting in a groove.

Nilan did not keep up with the punch output of Jonathan. He landed a partial connect with a left hand. Stan landed a decent left. Chris landed a partial connect with a right and a decent blow. He missed with a follow up punch. Stan landed three solid lefts. Nilan blocked the next punch. Jonathan landed two decent lefts. Chris missed with a right. Stan landed a partial connect. Nilan lost his balance and the men fell to the ice. This ended the fight.

I rate this as a narrow win for Jonathan. He landed several more punches. Stan landed some solid blows, but he used both hands and outboxed Nilan. He did not put major hurt on Chris, but got his attention with some of the shots. Chris was competitive, especially in the early going. I agree with the consensus opinion that Jonathan won the narrow victory.

Nilan throws a hit on Craig MacTavish against the boards in the Montreal end. Jonathan, who was skating by at the time, changes course and goes right at Nilan. These two come together and drop the gloves.

Both get good grips and manage to score with a few shots each in the early stages. Jonathan does a good job switching hands as well as ducking under some of Nilan's rights. Nilan sticks to the right hand and tries to find a home for it. Jonathan does manage to get off a flurry of lefts near the end of this fight - at least one of these shots look like it landed. Nilan seemed to hold on and finally attempts an overhand right but misses wildly. He then tries to trip Jonathan but winds up falling backwards instead with Jonathan on top.

Fairly close fight with Jonathan getting the narrow win.

Chris Nilan hits Craig MacTavish into the boards and Stan Jonathan immediately steps in and drops the gloves with Nilan. They grab hold of each other and Jonathan misses a right. Nilan throws two rights and lands one as Jonathan switches hands. Jonathan misses a left but then lands a left as Nilan misses a right. They get in close and while wrestling a little bit, Jonathan switches hands. Nilan lands a right and Jonathan connects with a right in return. Nilan misses a right and then Jonathan lands two rights as Nilan switches hands. Nilan connects with a left and they lock up afterwards. Jonathan switches hands as Nilan also switches hands, then Jonathan lands a left before Nilan misses a right. They remain in close and Nilan lands a right. Jonathan throws two rights and lands one and Nilan misses a right before Jonathan switches hands. Jonathan throws nine lefts and lands four and then Nilan misses a right after. Jonathan misses a left as Nilan stays in close and tries to use his leg to trip Jonathan but Nilan ends up tumbling backwards to the ice, dragging Jonathan down too. The linesmen then come in and break it up. Decent scrap between these two tough guys. Narrow win to the veteran Jonathan. He took control of the fight late and landed more and better punches after it was mostly even early.

Nilan checked McCrimmon hard into the boards and Jonathan immediately bumped into Nilan. Jonathan had the edge here as he shrewdly switched between lefts & rights in a smooth manner. Nilan got outpunched here. No damage done though.

Rookie Chris Nilan throws a hit on another rookie (Craig MacTavish), along the boards. In the era prior to the instigator rule, Stan Jonathan doesn't hesitate to go after Nilan. It's a pretty good battle, which ends when the Canadiens' winger tries to trip Jonathan, but instead takes a tumble himself.

Following the game, Nilan told reporters that he won the fight against Jonathan. In later years, he would also contend that he won round one against Jay Miller, and that he would beat Behn Wilson 7 out of 10 fights. Nilan was delusional well before his drug problems began.

Terry O'Reilly clear win Fun

Chris Nilan was a rookie with the Canadiens. He was a local boy from Roxbury, MA. He loved to fight when he played against the Bruins. He had great potential as a fighter, but he had some trouble against the top Bruins fighters early in his career.

On this occasion, he had a go with the veteran battler O'Reilly. Nilan threw a right hand with his first punch. It missed the target by several inches. Terry displayed the wisdom of experience by grabbing firm hold of Nilan's collar. Chris struggled with his balance for the rest of the bout as Terry was tugging at the front of his collar and throwing a flurry of left hands.

O'Reilly was accurate with his punches. He landed a partial connect and a solid blow. Nilan countered with a right cross that just missed the target. O'Reilly missed a blow. He landed a partial connect with pretty good pop. Terry missed a blow. Then, he landed a good shot. Chris was getting spun around in a circle and he fell to the ice from a combination of a loss of balance and the impact of the incoming punches.

I rate this as a clear win for O'Reilly. He landed a few shots with pretty good pop. Nilan only got a couple of shots off and neither one appeared to connect. Terry proved that he was still a top NHL heavyweight. Nilan was a little too raw and inexperienced and was no match for "Taz" at this early stage of his career.

Just before a faceoff Nilan and O'Reilly square of. Nilan throws a right to open the fight but immediately finds himself under fire by O'Reilly's flurry of lefts. O'Reilly lands well and Nilan has no answer to the punches by O'Reilly. He was also cut in the fight.

Chris Nilan on O'Reilly: "One of the toughest. That goes without saying."

Jay Wells on Nilan: "A good fighter, but not anywhere near the likes of the top tier fighters."

Terry O'Reilly clear win Fun

Chris Nilan and Terry O'Reilly both line up at center to take the faceoff in the neutral zone. Both seem to have words and glare at each other before pulling away from the faceoff to confront each other. They both drop the gloves and square off briefly.

Nilan is the first to leap in and they lock up, momentarily. Both fire at the same time. O'Reilly wih the left and Nilan with the right. Both land but O'Reilly's shot seems to land better and Nilan tries to hold on. O'Reilly fires away about 5 more lefts, landing a few as Nilan drops to his knees. The linesmen then jump in to end it.

As they are seperated, Nilan has a nice cut above his right eye and his jersey is bloodstained. Nilan has some words for O'Reilly all the way to the penalty box. Once in the box Nilan and O'Reilly continue chirping at each other.

Clear win for O'Reilly in this one.

Montreal Canadiens' rookie enforcer, Chris Nilan gets set to take a faceoff against Boston Bruins veteran tough guy, Terry O'Reilly. Nilan slashes O'Reilly on the ankle and they step back from each other. A linesman tries to keep them apart but O'Reilly goes around and sheds the mitts with Nilan. Nilan lowers his head and misses a right while grabbing on with O'Reilly. They spin and then stand back and open up. Nilan misses a right as O'Reilly lands a left, then O'Reilly lands another left just before Nilan misses a right. Nilan gets partly turned around and O'Reilly throws five lefts, landing three as Nilan lowers his head again and goes down. The linesmen come in and grab a hold of each combatant and after O'Reilly misses a right, they're split up. O'Reilly took the fight over pretty fast and gets the clear win. Alright fight.

After Milbury clipped Houle with his stick, Jonathan came barreling in and cross-checked Rejean in the face. Houle took the brunt of a good blow to the head. He was grimacing and holding his head away from the action.

This was a dirty hit up high by Jonathan. Larry Robinson confronted Milbury for his stick work and Mario Tremblay likely fought Stan as payback for the hit on Houle.

Robinson came over to confront Milbury after he got his stick up on Rejean Houle. Larry came over and held him for a brief time. The footage went away from the men for a bit. When the camera returned. Robinson was on top of Mike on the ice and it looked like he threw a right uppercut, which did not look like it landed with much pop.

I am not sure how Milbury got to the ice initially. The footage did not show any significant punch that landed. It may be that Robinson landed a blow or two, but the visual evidence does not confirm this.

As the fight between Larry Robinson and Mike Milbury is being broken up, Mario Tremblay and Stan Jonathan pair off and Tremblay gives Jonathan a shove. They shed their mitts and move past a linesman who is trying to keep them apart. Jonathan and Tremblay grab on and Jonathan misses a left. Tremblay throws two rights and lands one as Jonathan changes hands. Jonathan connects on a right while Tremblay misses a right and then loses his hold of Jonathan, then Trembaly misses a right while Jonathan misses a right. Tremblay misses a right while Jonathan misses a right and Tremblay attempts to grab back on before connecting with a right while Jonathan connects on a right as well. Tremblay grabs on again and misses a right before Jonathan misses a right, then Jonathan changes hands and connects with a left that knocks Tremblay's helmet off while Tremblay connects on a right. Jonathan misses a left while Tremblay misses a right and then Tremblay misses a right while Jonathan misses a left. Tremblay stumbles forward but stays on his feet while missing a right. Tremblay keeps in close with Jonathan and they wrestle. Jonathan grabs Tremblay's pants and attempts to take him down but Tremblay stays up and they continue wrestling. Jonathan then changes hands and misses a right as a linesman comes in and breaks up the fight as Tremblay goes to his knees. Tremblay covers up and Jonathan changes hands and misses a left around the linesman. Another linesman comes in then and grabs Jonathan. Decent tilt. They traded openly with each other for the first half of the fight but the latter half was almost all wrestling. It was a fairly close fight in my book, they both got a few punches in on the other. Draw.

Jonathan and Tremblay swapped blows in an energetic manner. Mario missed a punch and landed a partial connect. He was throwing right hands. Stan landed a decent right, missed a couple of shots, and landed another decent connect. Tremblay landed a couple of decent rights and missed with a couple of punches.

Jonathan switched to throwing lefts. He landed a decent blow and missed a shot. The men decided to clinch. Mario got Stan in a headlock. Jonathan tried his patented takedown by grabbing the leg strap. It was unsuccessful and the two were at a standstill until the refs intervened.

I see this fight as a draw. Both guys landed a few decent blows. Neither man had great accuracy. The power of the blows was surprisingly equal. Jonathan did not really land flush blows and his power advantage was negated.

Off a scrum Tremblay takes a poke at Jonathan and away they go. Tremblay gets off 2 rights connecting with one the side of Jonathans helmet, Jonathan fires off 6-7 rights connecting with a couple, Tremblay comes back with a couple more rights one that connects as Jonathan swithces to lefts and connects with a couple. Tremblay then goes with a bear hug and they wrestle around for a bit before the linesmen move in.
Stan threw and landed more and landed the best as well for a close win.

Starts when Tremblay forcibly keeps Jonathan away from a barb between 2 other players on the ice. I felt that Tremblay was a bit harsh in pushing Jonathan away , so that is why Jonathan is estatic to fight against Tremblay. The fight was quickly over as both guys exchanged 3 facial-punches each, and then the ref gets between them.

The quality of the punches by each is as follows: Jonathan threw long-traveled facial-punches while Tremblay only threw short-traveled facial-punches. Hence, this is why we have to give the narrow win to Jonathan

Rod Langway was a tough and talented defenseman. He was not noted for being an excellent fighter, although he was pretty good with his fists when he had to be. He was a physical force on the ice and was good at delivering checks and getting down to block shots.

Langway nailed Wensink with a good check along the boards. I'm not sure what precipitated his next response. Perhaps John had angered him earlier in the game. It may be that Langway knew that he had a top heavyweight that was going to want to fight him after that hit. At any rate, Rod drilled John with a hard punch when Wensink was attempting to get to his feet.

Langway got on top of Wensink and tried to throw a couple of quick lefts at him. The punches appeared to just miss. John was trying to get the big defenseman off of him. He was thrashing his arms and legs trying to get up. The refs stepped in right away and pulled the two apart. Wensink threw a few lefts that missed the target.

This was a clear win for Langway. He drilled Wensink with a good punch. However, the fight was definitely unfair. This was a jumping on Langway's part. This was a cheap move. It would have been interesting to see how Rod would have done in a fair fight. Instead, he chose the cowardly way of handling things.

Often, teams during this era felt it was necessary to establish something for the playoffs. This late season meeting between Boston and Montreal at the old Forum was no exception. The tone was set early in the first period with a bizarre incident involving Gilles Lupien and John Wensink. Initially, Lupien tried to pick a fight with Terry O'Reilly, with the Bruin winger backing away in somewhat embarassing fashion. When play resumed, Lupien hammered Wensink against the boards, then lost his balance. Wensink hovered over Lupien, with the towering defenceman apparently turtling on the ice. The Bruin winger waited for Lupien to get up - for what would have been round four between these two (including their junior days) - but Lupien stayed down. Finally, Wensink punched Lupien in the head. Now the Canadiens' defenceman got to his feet and appeared to go beserk, trying frantically to get at Wensink and eventually receiving a game misconduct for his efforts. Wensink was assessed a roughing minor.

A slew of fights followed this incident, although Wensink himself remained quiet until almost the mid-way point of the final period. With the Bruins losing badly, Wensink went for a kill shot on Larry Robinson, who was carrying the puck near the left wing boards. Robinson must have seen Wensink out of the corner of his eye, because he put on the brakes abruptly and the Bruin winger went sailing into the boards. Wensink was not injured and, shortly thereafter, lugged the puck down the left side. Robinson's defence partner, Rod Langway, drew a bead on him. In obviously retaliatory fashion, Langway hit Wensink hard into the boards and - with his opponent still off balance from the hit - the Canadiens defenceman tagged him with a solid right hand. Both men went down and were broken up by the linesmen.

While Langway gets the decision here, this fight was essentially unfair. Wensink did manage to get his gloves off after the Langway hit, but he was off balance when the fight started and didn't have the opportunity to defend himself or launch any offence of his own.

John Wensink carries the puck down the boards and takes a hit from Rod Langway. Wensink is knocked to his knees and Langway drops his gloves right after. Wensink drops his gloves and tries to get up but Langway lands a right on the button, knocking Wensink back to the ice. Langway falls on top of Wensink who wraps his arms around Langway. The officials hurry right in and grab the two while other players congregate around them. Wensink and Langway get up with the officials still between them and Wensink misses three rights around them at Langway. The two are then broken up and sent off. An unfair fight as Langway went right after Wensink following the hit along the boards. Wensink wasn't able to get up before Langway dropped his gloves and then landed a right to the face.

The two are near the blue line and Wensink is down, Langway gives him a shove and then drops the gloves and lands a quick right to the side of Wensink's face while he is still on one knee with gloves on and stick in hands. Langway then quickly jumps on Wensink before he can defend himself causing the linesmen to jump in ending the bout. An irate Wensink gets up and tries to throw a couple rights around the linesmen but misses and quickly decides to stop and go to the box.

Definitely an unfair fight here as Wensink was never given the chance to get up or defend himself.

I dont believe this should even be considered a fair fight by our standards. Wensink gave Langway a rough hit and skated away. As possesion changed hands and Wensink was skating back towards Langway's area of the ice, the big defenseman already had his gloves off. Wensink was being checked by another Montreal player (not sure who) and was already slipping to the ice when Langway punched him. He was not put down by a punch at all, he was already slipping to the ice when Langway got there. Wensink got up just fine to go after Langway but the officals and other players were already in the way and he had to be content with throwing a few left handed arm punches at Langway over the officials. They never truly squared off, and Langway certainly should not be given credit for beating John Wensink here.

Langway checks Wensink and Wensink sinks or slips to his knee from it. Langway then sees a window of opportunity to openly strike Wensink in the face while Wensink wasn't completely ready for it. I can't say that I blame Langway for doing this because Wensink was a villain in the league plus Langway probably knew deep down inside his own heart that he wouldn't be able to compete against Wensink in a hypothetical fight. Plus it was a split-second decision made by Langway. Hence, this slightly-scumbag move by Langway against a terrorizing-fighter (Wensink) seems virtually justified.

Langway TKO'd Wensink? -Anybody actually see this, or have the tape, to offer details? I mean, Wensink rarely lost, period, and even when he did- most famously to Nystrom- he was still standing at the end. Must have been some fight!Reply

According to our rules, it is a TKO if there was no further action. This includes refs preventing any further action.

Again, not to stand on a soapbox here but I want to once again state my vehement opposition to fight reviews sans descriptions. JruGordon and Luciano have literally dozens of fights reviewed on this site that describe nothing and have already been proven completely incorrect by myself and other reviewers on this site. It should be mandatory to accurately describe the events you are judging.Reply

The idea was that it's better to have a fight called even without a description than not at all, so long as the reviewer generally makes correct calls.

Good point. Unfortunately, we didn't know that at the time when those calls were made.

I am considering pulling all reviews without description by both of them.

Cool, thanks for hearing me out on that one. My concern is twofold... 1) This site is an awesome resource for information on various events, especially these older events and I consider it a privledge to be able to contribute to that information as accurately and objectively as possible and it would be a shame for it to be compromised by any misinformation or laziness

2) there is always the possibility of someone just assigning victories to players they happen to like in order to prop them up or conversely, assigning losses to players they dislike in order to bring them down ... I am not saying that Jru or Luciano ever did that, but that others could, you know?

Wensink had taken a wild run at Larry Robinson, who managed to pull up and avoid the hit, sending Wensink crashing into the boards. Langway then targeted Wensink, taking him out hard along the boards, then beating Wensink to the punch with a right hand that sent the Bruin to the ice. As he was somewhat off balance after the Langway bodycheck, Wensink never really had much of a chance.Reply

In the mid 80s I purchased a hockey magazine that had an extensive feature on fighting and fighters. It named the top four or five fighters on each team with a description of each. Langway was with the Capitals at the time, and his description was, as close as I can remember,

'cheap shot artist, backstabbing coward, jumps people from behind. Sucker punched Ray Neufeld and broke his nose. Gutless,'

From this video I kinda see why.
