Nilan grew up in the Boston area and was eager to prove his mettle in games against the Bruins. Secord was a good fighter in his Bruins years. This was a good matchup and both men fearlessly threw power punches. Nilan threw right hands at the onset of the bout. He connected with a couple of good shots.
Secord started to pound away with his left hand. Al landed well with three solid uppercuts. He turned over these blows ever so slightly and they landed with good impact. Secord appeared to have a few partial connects as well. The jersey popped up over Nilan's eyes for a time, but he was continuing to battle back. Chris was unable to land any more clean blows and the two began to clinch and wrestle until the refs stepped in.
This looked like a clear win for Secord. He landed more punches and there was more pop in his blows. He scored well with three hybrid left hook-uppercuts. Chris was outgunned in this bout. He landed a few good shots in the beginning, but Secord wrested control of the bout away from him.
The announcers made a good point about Secord's left handed stance being a problem. Nilan seemed to have problems with southpaws early in his NHL career. Terry O'Reilly got the better of Chris in their bout the season before. Nilan would improve dratically with his fists. He became one of the better pound-for-pound fighters of the 1980's.
Secord performed well with his fists early in his career. He earned wins over the likes of Larry Playfair and Dave Hutchison. He was a solid heavyweight fighter in the early 1980's. He had serious abdominal injuries a few years into his tenure with the Black Hawks. He was never the same as a fighter afterwards. He rarely beat the top fighters in the league and several of his bouts were boring wrestling matches.
My father was a big Secord fan during his time as a Bruin. My dad was more of a Rangers fan at this point, but enjoyed watching Al show promise as a young player. My father was furious when the Bruins traded Secord for Mike O'Connell. Although Mike was a good defenseman, he wasn't much of a physical player. Secord went on to become a top power forward in hockey and scored over 40 goals on three occasions.
My dad has argued that the Secord trade had a long term disastrous impact on the Bruins. O'Connell was a key man in the Bruins front office during the Mike Sullivan and Dave Lewis pacifist era of Bruins history. The team lacked passion during these years and was frequently pushed around. The Bruins ownership decided to jettison O'Connell when he was seriously considering giving a long-term extension to Hal Gill. It wasn't until Cam Neely started to have a say in player acquisitions that the Bruins played old-time tough hockey again and showed a marked improvement in their play on the ice. |

| Secord had a good run at Nilan in the middle of the fight as he hammered away at him with his lefts. Nilan lost his balance twice and never really got at Secord who pretty much was in control of the fight. |

| Al showed excellent hand speed in firing quick left hands to Nilan's head. # 20 of America's first NHL team the clear winner in this set to. |
