Chris Nilan and Greg Smith were pushing in front of the Minnesota net and decided to drop the gloves. They grabbed on and Nilan threw the first punches of the fight, connecting with two right hands. Smith partially connected with a right just before Nilan threw two rights, connecting on one. Smith missed another right as Nilan threw another two blows, one landing. Smith swung and missed with a big right hand as Nilan got in tight. Nilan threw two more rights, connecting on one to Smith's shoulder as Smith grazed Nilan's jaw with a punch. Nilan missed another right and got in tight before connecting to the back of Smith. Nilan threw two more rights, landing well on the first as Smith pushed Nilan towards the boards. The two switched positions and Nilan connected with a hard right hand that caused Smith to lean away from Nilan. This allowed Nilan to easily land a big uppercut which nearly knocked Smith's helmet off. Nilan threw another two rights, one landing before Smith connected with a hard right hand of his own as Nilan missed a follow up punch. This blow stunned Nilan and he paused for a moment. Smith got in tight and the two began to grapple. They continued to do so as Nilan was able to land an uppercut. The two paused for a few moments, both of them hanging on and trying to regain some energy. Nilan threw a right hand and hit Smith's helmet with his forearm. They continued to hang on and wrestle until Nilan connected with a hard uppercut that caused Smith's helmet to fall off. Smith missed a punch and then the wrestling resumed for a moment. Nilan connected with a solid uppercut and one more right hand before the linesmen stepped in to stop the fight.

This was an excellent fight. Nilan and Smith had been pushing in front of the Minnesota net before the gloves came off. Both combatants got off to a good start and were able to land some blows. Nilan's punches had more power and Smith got in tight after a while, trying to grapple with Nilan. Nilan continued to land some hard punches and took total control of the fight. Smith responded with a late right hand that stunned Nilan but Nilan was in control for most of the fight and a late flurry of punches prompted the linesmen to step in.

I judge this as a clear win for Nilan. He landed more punches than Smith, most of the punches had a large amount of power and he was in control for most of the fight. The fight was very entertaining as it was a lengthy battle with many hard punches connecting.

Good win for Nilan as he lands some solid rights early and as they move toward the end boards, connects with a beauty of an uppercut and some hard right crosses. Smith comes back with one good right to the face but not nearly enough to take the decision away from the more active Nilan.

It's Nilan from start to finish as he's constantly throwing punches at Smith who only answers sporadically. Nilan shows good variation with his rights as he tries some uppercuts and hooks. Smith never gets going and seems a bit surprised by Nilan's activity...

Larry Playfair on Nilan: "Nilan was like Torrie Robertson - both were strong/nuisance type of players that never go away - they're always in your face and ready to fight."

This fight gets going in front of the Minnesota net. Nilan pretty much has his right free the whole fight. Smith tries to hold on but does a terrible job containing Nilan. Nilan, more or less, controls this fight from start to finish. He is able to land a number of right hands and even mixes in uppercuts as well.

Smith sporadically returns fire in short 1 or 2 punch bursts. He does land a good right mid-way through the fight, but Nilan shakes it off and continues to fire right hands. At one point Nilan attempts to headlock Smith and drag him to the ice, but Smith stays on his feet and the fight goes on. Eventually the linesmen get in to end it.

Long fight with Nilan in control the whole way. Clear win for Nilan here.

Greg Smith, a fellow who usually knows how to handle himself does an about-face in this bout ... he literally let Nilan work him over with hardly any retaliation. It's hard to figure out on why Smith acted so passively in this fight in letting Nilan dominate him. Nilan overwhelmed him 11 facial-punches + 3 short-traveled facial-punches ... the punches were a mixture of side-arm shots and uppercuts.Smith only had 2 or 3 facially-connected punches. Clear win for Nilan and a bad showing by Smith.
