Nilan and Curran had a pretty good rivalry going in the mid-1980's. Nilan was a better overall fighter and one of the best pound-for-pound entrants in the league. Curran was much taller and his size, reach, and strenth advantages sometimes gave Nilan some problems. Chris was the bigger puncher and better tactician.
Nilan threw three right hands that missed the mark in the beginning of the bout. Curran countered with a couple of weak left handed offerings that partially connected. Nilan came back with two partially landing rabbit punches. Curran was unable to land his right early in the bout because Chris had a vise-grip hold on his right shirt sleeve.
Brian continued to be unable to get any right hands off. The right cross was his best weapon and he was increasing frustrated by his inability to connect. Chris was unable to get past the reach of Curran for a time. He found a tactic that worked by popping Brian with two decent uppercuts.
This was a narrow victory by Nilan. He was very inaccurate with his shots and only landed well with a couple of uppercuts. Curran lost the bout because other than a few lefts that partially connected, he really didn't land anything of significance. Nilan had mastered a rule in Fighting 101; it is vitally important to get a good grip to neutralize the best weapon of your opponent. This was a disappointing bout where more punches missed that landed. |

| Both drop their gloves in front of the Bruins goal. Nilan throws a right, Curran a short left and then Nilan switches and throws three lefts at Curran, first a short hook, then a straight one that narrowly misses and the last one a nice that lands well. They wrestle for while before Curran throw three rapid lefts at Nilan. Nilan tries a couple of rights while tying up Curran's right arm. Nilan then switches to his left, landing a good shot. Curran gets his right hand free and throws a punch. Nilan again switches hands and throw rights and a left before Curran goes for the takedown. Nilan, known to study his opponents on tape, really fought smartly here as he switched hands whenever the situation called for it. |

| Video starts as a fight in progress. Easy call, since Curran didn't even land a facial-punch throughout the fight because Nilan stifled his swinging arm. Nilan lands 2 marginal uppercuts to get the narrow win. |

Steve Rooney was a young player for the Canadiens. He liked to fight and was pretty good with his fists. Keith Crowder was a veteran at this point. He had a lot of fights, but most of his bouts were boring snooze-fests and wrestling matches. He did not generate much power with his punches and rarely put the hurt on anyone.
Rooney was looking for a fight and grabbed Crowder. He fired away with a series of left hooks. Keith did not fire back. Instead, he put his head down and slowly slumped to the ice in order to mitigate the effects of the blows. Steve landed four consecutive punches with decent impact. Steve switched to the right hand. He threw a few more shots. He was able to land one more moderately hard blow before the referees stepped in to bring the bout to a halt.
This was a pathetic performance by Crowder. He appeared to turtle in this bout. I rate this as a clear win for Rooney. Steve probably would have earned a more decisive victory if Keith had decided to fight back. Rooney landed a series of moderately hard shots. He was very accurate with his blows. Steve tried his best to make a fight and probably did as well as could be expected under the circumstances. He couldn't land heavy power shots because Crowder curled up like an armadillo on the ice.
This was an embarrasing non-effort by Crowder. In this instance, he reminded me of Patriots quarterback Tony Eason. Eason gave the most feeble effort by a starting quarterback in NFL history in the Super Bowl against the Chicago Bears. Whenever a Bear defender penetrated the backfield, Eason curled up in the fetal position to avoid contact. Crowder displayed a similar tendency to turtle at times in his career.
Growing up in the Boston area, I remember when Bruins fans generally regarded Crowder as a rugged power forward. While he had good skill as a player, his performances with his fists never warranted that reputation. I've seen several of his fights on video and he has never impressed me. There must have been some real homers in my school when I was a kid.
Crowder had a lot of "fights" on his record, but to me he was a fake tough guy. He seldom performed well against the good fighters in the league. He had three times as many losses as victories according to his record on DYG. A guy doesn't need to be a great fighter to earn my respect. Nevin Markwart was his teammate and Nevin was strictly a second-tier fighter. However, Markwart was a warrior who got every ounce out of his fighting abilities. That is a guy I have a world of respect for. Based on the performances I have seen, I don't have respect for Crowder as a fighter. His reputation in the Boston area as a tough guy is clearly fraudulent. |

| Rooney and Crowder found each other during a scrum. Rooney got in a few lefts and wrestled Crowder down to his knees. Rooney landed a few rights and the refs stepped in. Win Rooney. |

Apr 18, 2008 17:22 ET | I worked with Steve Rooney after he retired from Hockey for Network Plus telecommunications in Quincy Massachusetts before the company went belly up in '02. He was about 6'2 I'd say, but he was well over his playing weight at about 240. He was one of the loudest people I've ever met as my office was right next to his. Every time he was on a sales call, I could hear the entire conversation through the wall with the door closed, as if he were in my office. All he ever talked to potential clients about was his Stanley Cup ring. He was a nice guy, but a little overbearing and pompous! | Reply |

Apr 27, 2008 21:58 ET | I talked to Daryl Stanley before and he fought Rooney a couple of times. Daryl wasn't the type of guy to talk bad about anybody he fought, but he said that Rooney was one guy that was always mouthing off on the ice or at the bench and Daryl never appreciated that. This kind of relates to your story about Rooney being loud when you worked with him.
But despite his mouth, Rooney was a game fighter and would fight anybody it seemed. He wasn't the greatest fighter in the world but he could hold his own and had some decent showings. His fight with Craig Coxe at the Montreal Forum is one fight that comes to mind.
His departure from Montreal was due to the fact that the Habs had enough guys that could fight like Chris Nilan, John Kordic, a rookie Shayne Corson, Dave Maley, and Sergio Momesso, so Rooney was the odd man out. The Habs didn't need that many fighters on the team. And one of Rooney's last fights with the Habs was against Richard Zemlak of the Nordiques in the preseason of 1986-87 and Zemlak beat Rooney quite badly and broke his nose and there was blood all over the ice. So that didn't help Rooney's prospects of sticking around on the Habs roster as a fighter. And a little over a month later, he was traded to the Winnipeg Jets. | Reply |
