The two are battling along the boards and decide to go. They wrestle around for a bit, Ruff gets off a short right or two that do no damage and the linesmen move in.

Chris Nilan win by TKO Fun
7
Steve Dykstra was a rugged defenseman who had a lot of guts. He took on the toughest guys around. He was not a cerebral fighter. He was a slugger who tried to match punch-for-punch with some of the best heavyweights around. Chris Nilan was a small heavyweight, but he was a smart fighter with good power. Nilan was a tall order for a guy like Dykstra who was easy to hit.

Nilan landed a good right hand early in the fight. He followed with a partially connecting uppercut and another good right cross. Chris jumped out way ahead in the fight in short order. Dykstra was a brave guy who was no quitter. He tried to shake off the blows and battle back. He missed a right, landed a decent blow, and missed a couple more punches. Nilan tied up his right hand effectively.

Chris continued to throw rights. He missed a punch, landed a partial connect, connected with a solid right, and missed a blow. Nilan landed a partial connect with solid pop. He missed with another punch. Dykstra missed with a right hand. Nilan landed a pretty good right, missed a punch, and landed a decent blow.

Dykstra switched to the left hand and surprised Nilan with a solid left hook. He tried to rally down the stretch. He missed a right hand, landed a decent shot, and missed a punch. He landed a body punch and missed a punch. Then, he pitched forward a bit and missed a right.

Nilan threw a right hand that landed right on Steve's temple. Dykstra went down and fell to his knees. He laid his face on the ice and remained in a prone position as the refs broke up the bout. His body went limp after absorbing the last right. Chris skated away and Steve remained on the ice for a few seconds. He was slow to get up and skate away.

I rate this as a TKO win for Nilan. This was a good bout, but Chris was in command throughout. Dykstra landed a solid left hook and tried to get back in the fight. Nilan appeared to be playing possum a bit. He let Steve throw a few unanswered right hands and get his confidence up. He waited until Dykstra made a mistake and immediately capitalized. Steve looked shaky at the end of the fight. I think a TKO win for Nilan is the right call.

I saw a good article about Dykstra on Joe Pelletier's excellent blog. He pointed out that Steve was an overachiever and was fortunate to make the NHL. Dykstra did not make a good junior squad until he was twenty years old. He had to work hard on his skating to play in the NHL.

Dykstra played the game with passion and intensity. He gave it all he had and never backed down from challenges from the toughest heavyweights around. His problem was that he tried to go tit-for-tat with power punchers. Steve had a high pain threshold and could take a good wallop. The problem was that he often took several wallops from guys like Nilan, Brian MacLellan, and Dave Richter. He was a valiant warrior, but it was like an El Camino trying to run over a big Monster Truck in a demolition derby. He generally ran out of steam after taking too much punishment in these slugfests.

Dykstra was a popular guy with the fans. They appreciated his swashbuckling style. He got less playing time as Buffalo added depth at defense. He had the good fortune to get traded to the Oilers in time for a successful Stanley Cup run. Steve deserves to be remembered for his gallantry. He was involved in some excellent action fights.

Chris Nilan clear win Fun
6
As play moves into the Buf. zone the two eye each other and drop em, Nilan gets inside right away and ties Dykstra up then lands 2-3 nice rights, Dykstra comes back with a right of his own but misses with another and Nilan responds landing 2 rights and a big right uppercut, they tie up briefly then Nilan lands another big right, misses with another and Dykstra gets going finally gets going throwing 5-6 rights but missing with all but one, Nilan misses with a right and they go to the ice ending the bout.
Nilan totally outlanded Dykstra in this one for the clear victory.

Lindy Ruff narrow win Fun

Lalor hits Ruff along the boards, they tie up and go. Lalor goes for the hug but Ruff gets him bent over, slips his right free and gets off a couple short uppercuts landing one or two, Lalor locks him up again and then takes Ruff to the ice ending the bout.
