| Jay Miller and Chris Nilan drop the gloves and get in close from the get go. Miller throws three rights and lands two. Nilan throws three rights and lands one while they get some space from each other. Then Miller misses a right and Nilan lands a right. Miller switches hands and throws three lefts, connecting on two, then as Nilan misses a right, Miller misses a left. Nilan gets in close and Miller switches hands, missing two rights. Miller switches hands and misses three lefts, then switches hands yet again and misses a right. Nilan also switches hands and connects on a left. Miller and Nilan switch hands, get some space from each other, and have a brief exchange. Miller throws three lefts and connects with one while Nilan throws three rights and connects with two. Nilan's helmet becomes dislodged during the exchange and gets caught around his head. Miller's helmet comes off as well and they get back in close. Miller throws six lefts and connects with one then Nilan switches hands and misses a left. Miller misses three lefts and Nilan switches hands and lands a right then Miller switches hands and misses a right. The linesmen come in and end the fight then. Good heavyweight fight. Miller was far more active but the quantity and quality of punches landed were quite even. Draw in my book. |

Miller goes right after Nilan near center ice and they both drop em, they both start grappling with Miller throwing a couple rights from in close that miss, Nilan comes back with a right that catches pads then lands a short right to the head, Miller switches to lefty and lands 3 good ones to the side of the head and they grapple a bit, Nilan then goes lefty landing one then goes back to rights and both trade punches with Nilan landing a couple, Miller ties him up then gets the lefts going again missing with two then landing a uppercut followed by a overhand left dislodging Nilans helmet, they grapple a bit more then Miller lands a short left or two as they grapple then both land a short right before then linesmen jump in ending the bout.
Good bout with both landing some good ones but Miller clearly outlands Nilan to get the edge in this one. |

| This battle was brewing ever since Nilan butt-ended Rick Middleton in the mouth early in the season. Brian Curran took on Nilan twice in Montreal, but in this game at the Boston Garden Jay Miller introduces himself to Knuckles. The two local boys (Miller, Natick/ Nilan, West Roxbury) went toe-to-toe in probably the best fight of the 1985-86 season. Miller got the best of this exchange connecting on several right crosses and uppercuts. This set the stage for the first of many feueds between the two. |

| Jay Miller had recently been called up from the AHL, and was sent out opposite Chris Nilan early in this game. Nothing happened. However, during the second shift for both men, Nilan upends Miller. The Bruin winger regains his feet and goes after Nilan. As he sometimes does, Nilan put the accent on defence in this battle. Miller gets the nod on points. |

On first viewing, the cameras got to the fight while it was in progress, and Kurvers and Markwart are engaged in a wrestling match. Kurvers tries to throw 2 or 3 punches, one hitting the side of Markwart's butt-ugly helmet, and then Nevin wrestles him down to the ice. Markwart actually didn't even throw a punch. But, on the replay, you can see that right off the bat, Markwart nailed Kurvers right in the jaw with a weak looking right that was hard enough to stagger him, but knock him down - after that they started to wrestle. Kurvers got up rubbing his jaw tenderly.
So, there was indeed a shot that landed here that struck Kurvers - you have to see the replay to believe it.... |

The two go into the corner and come out talking, Kurvers drops the mitts first and grabs hold of Nevin, Markwart slips in a quick right catching Kurvers on the neck then misses with a right, they wrestle a bit then Kurvers misses with a couple rights and Markwart takes him down to the ice.
Nothing really landed in this bout so call it a draw. |

| With the Garden fans still buzzing about the Miller/Nilan fight, Tom Kurvers and Nevin Markwart decided to go at it. It started innocently enough by talking before both dropped the gloves. Markwart slipped a nice right to Kurvers chin in this one, leaving the Hab defenseman rubbing his face as both head back to the dressing room. |

| Replay shows markwart landing a decent punch to the jaw of kurvers who is rubbing his jaw after the fight was over. I think kurvers either landed a full punch or a marginal punch while they were grappling. Anyway, narrow win for markwart. |

Dec 5, 2007 02:45 ET | Lindy, watch the tape again and you'll see Markwart slips a right that catches Kurvers right in the chin. After they are separated, you can clearly see Kurvers rubbing his chin as he skates to the dressing room. The replay caught this punch real nicely. | Reply |

Because I swear, in mine, Markwart doesn't throw a punch - maybe in mine they only got roughing minors and I'm describing the wrong incident, but from the clip I have, I can't see a a punch from Nevin landing. Like I said, I don't see any punches thrown by Markwart - maybe they fought a second time that isn't yet registered on this site, where the outcome is as you describe? But I highly doubt Kurvers fought a guy like Nevin twice - I dunno, take a look for yourself:

Jan 29, 2008 00:53 ET | Yep that's the fight and the clip, but there was more too it then that, at least in my homemade fight tape. It's all coming back to me now. Right where the clip cuts out (as Markwart heads off the ice and to the dressing room), the camera goes back to Kurvers who is rubbing his chin as he skates off, which even the announcers noted. Then they cut back to an instant replay of the start of the fight. You see them standing there, just talking and then they drop the gloves. When they do Markwart slips a punch which catches Kurvers right in the chin, which was then followed by what was shown on this clip. It was appparent that was the punch Kurvers was feeling as he headed out.
So it is the right clip, just a bad edit job, that failed to capture the follow-up replay. | Reply |

| After getting his ass kicked in the first fight, Nilan decides to get even by jumping Jay Miller at the faceoff circle. He proceeds to pound Miller as Bruin defenseman Brian Curran jumps in to Millers rescue. Amazingly enough, Nilan catches Curran with a quick right before a major scrum involving all five skaters on the ice unfolds. While all hell is breaking loose, Miller and Nilan are still swinging away wrestling each other to the ice. Both take turns rolling around the ice, but Nilan scores the win in this one. |

All of a sudden, Nilan throws off his gloves and grabs Miller who turns away and drops his gloves. As Miller gets in tight, Brian Curran drops his gloves and jumps in. Curran throws two rights and lands one on Nilan as he goes down with Miller. Other players on the ice shed the mitts and pair off They get up and a linesman and Chris Chelios jump on top of Curran and haul him off of Miller and Nilan. Chelios stays on top of Curran while down on the ice and the linesman leaves. Curran is able to get up and wrestle Chelios into the boards, even though Curran is blinded by his jersey which came up over his head. Nilan and Miller then go down and the linesmen get in between them. Curran and Chelios stop fighting and separate. Alright line brawl between two rivals. | Fun

The clip I had from this game had a stoppage of play and Curran skating up to Nilan and shoving him behind the Bruins net. A crowd of players gathers as one linesman steps in moving Curran away from Nilan, but as he does this, Jay Miller skates in from the other side and shoves Nilan again, a crowd gathers and the linseman go over to Miller, this leave Curran open again to give Nilan another shove, forcing Nilan to look in both directions as both Curran and Miller want a piece of him.

This fight was triggered after Curran came to Jay Miller's aid after being jumped by Chris Nilan. A 5-on-5 scrum ensued with Chris Chelios trying to wrestle Curran to the ice. At first Chelios seems to have Curran down, but not out. Although he has his jersey pulled over his head, Curran managed to get to his feet and then charged Chelios full speed into the boards sending Chelios back into the Montreal bench.
The refs finally pulled the two apart telling Curran he's out of the game as the third man in. As he makes his way to the dressing room, Curran and Nilan start yapping at each other. Curran points the finger at Nilan and gives him the one armed salute as he and Miller head to the Bruins dressing room.
This was a wrestling match more than anything else with no real punches thrown, but I'll give Curran the slight nod because of how he took what should have been a helpless situation for himself and managed to turn the tables on Chelios even with his jersey over his head.
It's been 13 years later and I still have never seen a player do this to another player again. |

| Nothing special here - earlier in the the shift these 2 had an exchange in front of the benches, but they came together again when Markwart chased Lalor into the Habs corner going after a loose puck. Markwart hits Lalor up high and Mike takes exception - but before Markwart has time to get both gloves off, Lalor grabs him by the hips and slams him down to the ice, WWE style. The refs jump in to pry Lalor off before any meaningful punches could be thrown with Markwart flat on his back. Not much of a scrap, but nice take down by Lalor. |

| Markwart gives Lalor a facewash and as play goes on the two trade shoves till the puck is driven into the corner and Markwart takes Lalor hard and high into the boards, Lalor tackles Markwart to the ice and throws a couple rights before the linesmen jump in. |
