Nevin Markwart narrow win Fun
6
Steve Rooney was a pretty good fighter and chippy player out of Providence College. He appeared to be the favorite against the scrappy little Nevin Markwart. Nevin was brave and game, but he usually came up a little short against the big guys he faced.

Rooney played a similar style of game as Markwart. He always looked to make a physcial impact in games. He nailed Gord Kluzak with a check in the corner. Kluzak fell to the ice. Nevin was not happy with seeing his teammate dumped on the ice. He went right after Rooney.

Rooney landed a couple of decent partial connects at the onset of the bout. Nevin landed a partial connect with the right hand. He missed with a follow up blow. Markwart was able to get a good grip on Steve's right hand. Rooney missed with some follow up right hands.

Nevin worked the fight into close quarters. He missed with a couple of right hands. Then, his accuracy improved. He hit the target and scored with increasing frequency. Markwart landed a couple of partial connects. Rooney missed with a left hand. Nevin made him pay by landing a good right hand counter punch. The officials stepped in at this point and stopped the bout.

I rate this as a narrow win for Markwart. He landed a good shot at the end of the fight. He also landed a few partial connects along the way. Rooney landed a couple decent shots at the beginning of the fight. Nevin was able to gain a measure of control in the bout by turning this into an infighting contest. Steve started to miss his shots, while Nevin began to land on the inside with increasing frequency.

Nevin had a good performance in this bout. He boxed effectively here, but usually he wasn't a great tactician. Nevin had some defensive deficiencies. He got hit with too many shots along the way. He was a guy who would take three or four punches to land one.

Nevin had a good punch for his size. He could put some hurt on opponents if he got a chance to land a big left hook. Markwart could sometimes be overpowered when he wrestled with an opponent. I remeber watching his fight with Al Secord on live television. Secord picked him up and rammed him along the boards and roughed him up with a combination of wrestling and punching.

Nevin was a tough customer and a decent fighter. He lost more than he won, but he was usually giving up twenty pounds or more in bouts. He was as brave as they come. He just had physical limitations that kept him from beating too many quality opponents.

Nevin was at his best in this upset win over Rooney. He would have been better served to develop more of a boxing and infighting style. He usually could not resist a shootout and often got the short end of the stick in his fights. He was an exciting and brave performer. He was as courageous as they come.

Nevin Markwart clear win Fun

Markwart again gives up a lot of size to Rooney, but peppers him with uppercuts and over hand rights in this one.
After throwing some rights Rooney tries to throw a big overhand left which goes over Markwart's head. Markwart really takes advantage of the miss here following up and connecting with an over hand right wich catches the back of his helmet and brings the Canadien to the ice.

Chris Nilan narrow win Fun
8
Chris Nilan and Jay Miller drop the gloves before the puck itself is dropped. Early on, Miller and Nilan grapple and then Miller misses a left. Nilan then lands three solid lefts while Miller tries replying with two lefts but misses both. Miller ducks his head but Nilan lands two more lefts and they get in close quarters. Miller changes hands and lands three rights, then Nilan changes hands and misses a right. Miller misses two rights then changes hands and connects with a left. Just then, Nilan lands a right and Miller changes hands as Nilan misses a right. Miller misses a right and Nilan throws three rights while they get space from one another, Nilan landing two. Then Miller misses a right while pushing Nilan against the bench boards. Nilan then connects on a right and they grapple with Miller landing a right. Miller changes hands and misses a left, then Nilan misses a right. Miller connects with a left and then moves in close quarters again. Miller throws three lefts to the body, landing one. They grapple and Miller changes hands, missing a right as Nilan remains in close quarters. Nilan changes hands and they get space from one another. Nilan throws two lefts and connects with one as Miller throws four lefts and connects on two, one taking off Nilan's helmet. They grapple but the linesmen then jump in and end the fight. A good battle between two heavyweights. Nilan landed more and better overall to get the win.

Miller Vs. Nilan III: These two go toe-to-toe once again throwing heavy rights and lefts. Both players get in some good shots here leaving the rubber match in a draw. Best thing about this fight is it happens in front of the Montreal bench. You get a good look at Canadien players like Mario Tremblay, Tom Kurvers, Steve Rooney, etc. cheering on Nilan as the fight goes on. Another classic bout between these two and arguably the second best fight of the season outside of Miller Nilan !.
