Petr Svoboda starts out with the puck but stops up as Cam Neely comes in. Neely runs Svoboda right into the boards. Svoboda was knocked down and his helmet was jarred off. There was some rough stuff afterwards but nothing major. Good hit by Neely. Fun

Both Neely and Corson trade some good shots, a lot of people give Corson the edge because of all the blood. But the fact remains that all Corson did was reopen stitches Neely took after taking a puck to the face.

Close, close fight. Neely wins this one for throwing a few more, and connecting a a few more. The blood likely came from the two heads butting together, and Cam's stiches getting reopened (he had been cut earlier from an Al Pederson shot). Most of Corson's shots were shorter side arm shots connecting with the sides of Neely's head.

Neely had his head up the whole time connecting with well place shots. Corson had his head down (maybe scared) and was connecting the odd time with blind shots. Neely with the edge in this one.

Good even fight as the 2 players fight along the boards. Neely with mostly lefts and Corson with the rights. Both players land some good punches as they are in tight (not hugging though) and switch hands during the fight. Corson reopens some stiches which Neely got earlier in the game from a Pederson shot.

Neely is from Vancouver, not Toronto putz! Read my review of the Neely McCrae fight when McCrae was with Quebec. McCrae won the fight. Clark also beat Neely, and I gave Tocchet the win over Neely in an awesome fight. Seems to me like you have a complex! Would it make you feel better if I post on Larry Robinson kicking the shit out of Dave Schultz or Mike Milbury? Larry won both fights in my book, and the Schultz fight wasn't even close!

Leafsfan4477, how dare you not give a clear win to Corson? Did you know that Corson was responsible for the pollio vaccine? Were you by chance aware that he is a three time finalist for the Nobel Peace Prize? Haven't you heard that he was voted "Most Likely To Succeed" in the eight grade??? Look at him, look at his handsome face... look...
There we go. Much better.

In remission for the first three years of the decade, the Boston-Montreal rivalry is rekindled in the final week of the '83-84 regular season. This game, at the old Garden, was spiced by ten separate fights and likely paved the way for a wild finish to an '84-85 pre-season game between the two clubs. The rough stuff continued into the regular season, with both games in Boston featuring a half-dozen battles.

If things weren't wild enough, Chris Nilan butt-ended Rick Middleton - of all people - early in the '85-86 season. There were five fights the next time the teams met, including a pair involving Nilan and Brian Curran. The Bruins decided that they needed a little more sock and called up Jay Miller. Montreal responded with John Kordic. While the two clubs were well-matched physically in '85-86, the departure of Brian Curran at season's end shifted the balance of power in Montreal' favor.

Jay Miller finds himself a little outnumbered as the fireworks get underway in the '86-87 subject game. Miller jostles with and/or challenges several Montreal players. Chris Chelios then grabs Tom McCarthy unceremoniously, who responds by wrestling the Canadiens' defenceman to the ice. With the attention now focused elsewhere, Miller and Dave Maley square off. Miller overwhelms Maley, punching him to the ice, although no real damage was done. Maley's problems, however, were not over.

Nilan, who had flattened Paul Bouthillier during the melee, was being escorted to the dressing room, when he took a shot at Ken Linseman who was standing next to the runway at the Boston bench. Linseman followed Nilan, albeit at a safe distance. Soon players on both clubs were grappling in the runway. Miller, trying to make good on an earlier threat, went looking for Nilan under the stands. Maley went after Miller, but found his path blocked by a stocky, nattily attired man. Believing that the man was a plain-clothes policeman who was coming over to restrain him, Maley stopped his pursuit and allowed the "policeman" to approach him. The "policeman" proceeded to flatten Maley with a big left uppercut, the damage made all the worse by a ring which the assailant was wearing.

The plainclothes "officer" was actually Louie Sleigher, one of two Bruin players not dressed for the game. In fact, Sleigher had sustained a groin injury in a fight with Larry Robinson in the previous year's playoff that would prove to be career ending. Word spread that Maley had been clocked by either Craig Nienhuis or Sleigher. Nienhuis presented himself at the Canadiens' dressing room showing that he didn't have a ring on either of his hands, thereby implicating Sleigher and soon earning himself a permanent trip to the minors.

The Bruins and Canadiens were fierce Adams Division rivals. The games were always intense in the 1980's and there were plenty of fisticuffs between the two squads. This game started to get ugly near the end of the second period. Cam Neely and Shayne Corson had a terrific bout. This really got both teams pumped up. Things really got out of hand at the 35:09 mark of the period.

A line brawl broke out and several players squared off. Boston's best heavyweight Jay Miller was throwing his body around on the ice. He hit Guy Carbonneau behind the play. Guy shoved Miller back and Chris Chelios also cross-checked Jay as he skated by. Players from both teams started pushing and shoving. Tom McCarthy got close to Chris and Chelios got him in a headlock. Tom got loose from the wrestling hold and threw a couple of punches. He missed with a punch and landed a decent shot. He got on top of Chelios and kept pushing down vigorously on the back of his head.

As the McCarthy-Chelios altercation was winding down, Jay Miller had a go with David Maley. This fight was a mismatch and Jay landed some good right hands and knocked down Maley. The officials started to break up the bout. Miller landed a couple more partial connects around the zebras.

Chris Nilan tried to pull McCarthy off of Chelios. Paul Boutilier tried to prevent Nilan from getting involved. Chris landed a good left hook in response. Boutilier continued to wrestle with Nilan. Paul was not looking to fight, but he was playing with fire by grabbing Chris in a headlock. Nilan was very annoyed and wanted to get in the middle of the action. He managed to get Paul's helmet off. It appeared that Chris was talking to Boutilier and he managed to get Paul to release his grip. Boutilier looked towards the wrestling match on the ice. Nilan responded with a sneaky right hand that landed with great force. He knocked Paul to the ice with the booming right hand.

Nilan had Boutilier in big trouble. He landed two more good rights and Paul slumped to the ice as a beaten man. Jay Miller was trying to desperately get away from an official to go after Nilan. The zebra tackled him and Miller pointed menacingly at Chris from across the ice. He was warning that there would be an eventual price to pay for the sucker punch on Boutilier.

With much difficulty Kevin Collins escorted Miller off the ice. Things appeared to be getting under control. Nilan was the next to be escorted to the dressing room. Ken Linseman appeared to mouth off to Chris as he entered the runway along the Bruins bench. Chris turned and landed a decent shot with a left hand on "The Rat." This punch caused the Bruins bench to go berserk. Linseman chased after Nilan in the corridor closely followed by backup goalie Doug Keans. Canadiens players went over to the runway because Chris was outnumbered and possibly in some danger.

Mike McPhee started to push and shove with Bruins coach Terry O'Reilly. O'Reilly could be really hotheaded in these situations, but he displayed self-control and refused to throw punches. Mike Milbury joined O'Reilly in reasoning with McPhee and trying to calm the Canadien player down. Patrick Roy jumped on the Bruins bench and got into the hallway in pursuit of Linseman and Keans.

On the ice, Claude Lemieux and Nevin Markwart traded blows. Nevin landed a pretty good right while the camera was shifting briefly to the action on the ice. The cameras shifted back to the major disturbance in the hallway. Geoff Courtnall was wrestling vigorously with Brian Skrudland. Meanwhile, Lemieux landed a solid right hand. Markwart nailed Claude with a big right uppercut. This punch landed with terrific force and probably caused the huge mouse over Lemieux's right eye. The cameras kept going back and forth between the fight and the chaos in the hallway. Claude pushed Markwart's head down and landed two good right uppercuts on Nevin. He appeared to land one more partial connect before the zebras came in to separate the men.

The brawl started to wind down at this point. Roy and some other Canadiens emerged from the corridor and came back onto the ice. The cameras showed the face of Claude Lemieux. He had a grotesque welt around his right eye. He looked like Quasimodo from the "Hunchback of Notre Dame." His face showed the damage the was caused in this wild and vicious brawl.

The "Brawl in the Hallway" was one of the wildest scenes in the storied history of the Boston Garden. This was an unforgettable hockey event. I remember seeing replays of Nilan punching Linseman on the local news over and over again. This was a scene of pandemonium that will never be forgotten.

After knocking down Boutilier during the scrum, Nilan heads to the dressing room. While walking through the Bruins bench, Nilan takes a shot at Ken Linseman. Linseman goes after Nilan with his stick as the two wade through a crowd of players, fans, trainors, security and police before ending up out of sight as they rumble in the hallway between dressing rooms. This clears the benches. The Canadiens storm toward the runway, Bruin coach Terry O'Reilly holds off Mike McPhee, the pair almost come to blows before Milke Milbury interceeds and challenges McPhee to fight him if he wants to go, but neither do. A lot of clutching a grabbing ensues with Courtnall and Skrudlund, Burridge and Walter, etc. etc. As the wave of Canadiens head toward the bench, Lemieux grabs Markwart and the two go at it on the ice. Fun

As both teams are scrambling in the Bruins bench, runway and hallway, Claude Lemieux and Nevin Markwart got toe-to-toe at center ice. Markwart tags Lemieux with a right uppercut and you can see Lemieux head snap back just as the camera cuts back to the bench area. The blow gave Lemieux quite a welt under his left eye.
