| In tight fight, nothing significant lands, Corson wrestles Robertson down and Robertson breaks his leg when falling down. |

Joonibal Nov 14, 2005 05:24 ET | I am pretty sure that this is the fight that Corson landed on top of Robertson and broke his leg; Nilan also bought him flowers or something as Robertson lay in a hospital afterwards. I don't remember the fight itself too well, though I probably watched just about every televised Whaler games in the mid- and late-80s (my friend's dad also had season tickets, so I caught the Whalers at home quite a lot).
Robertson is one of the worst, long-lasting enforcer I've ever seen. Perhaps the only thing more comic than Torrie's lack of fighting skills is how the monster who was supposed to replace him--Marc Laforge (sp.?)--turned out to be a paper tiger when he came up. | Reply |

Torrie's ankle collapsed and went sideways on him in a very gruesome scene. This led the Whalers to go out and get Dave Semenko to fill the enforcer void and they also called up a rookie Shane Churla to do second duty behind Sammy. Robertson would be out with his injury for about a full calendar year and returned back to the ice for the Whalers in 1987-88.
You are also correct about Chris Nilan visiting Robertson in the hospital in Montreal after his injury and I think you are right that he brought Torrie some flowers. I read about it in the Hockey News at the time and I was somewhat surprised by Nilan's actions. I have always heard about how much of a jerk Nilan is off the ice, so I wouldn't have thought he would do something like this. Also, they two of them had fought earlier in that same game before the Corson fight as you can see in the fight log, and they had had a few fights over the years, so that was interesting as well. It just goes to show you the kind of respect these guys have for each other off the ice. As is typical of most enforcers, they can fight and battle each other on the ice for 60 minutes but then go for a beer with each other after the game is over. It also shows you that Nilan wasn't always the jerk everyone thought he was. I am not saying he was an angel, but he obviously had a caring side to him to do what he did for Robertson in this instance.
BTW, I know that Robertson wasn't the greatest fighter and his fights were usually boring wrestling matches, but there was not a more game fighter in his day. He wasn't a very big guy yet he fought all the heavyweights without hesitation, and he was always there to stick up for his teammates. He was always voted as the most popular player for the Whalers by the fans and he was a true warrior game in and game out. He could have played on my team any day of the week. | Reply |

heezgawn Apr 11, 2012 08:27 ET | I remember reading Robertson talking about this shortly after it happened. When he and Corson fell to the ice, he calmly said to Corson, 'get Woody, (Whalers trainer Tommy Woodcock) my leg's broke.' Robertson described how Nilan visited him in the hospital and brought a pizza, and that they ate pizza and watched a hockey game together in Robertson's hospital room. | Reply |
