Nilan seems to land some nice shots right from the start of the fight, but Mellanby responds with a few of his own. Both do an excellent job of tying each other's bread and butter, which is their rights. Nilan does trying a nice haymaker, but misses and throws him off balance, but Mellanby can't take advantage of Nilan's miss.

From what I saw, both Nilan and Mellanby are throwing, but none are really landing... alot of shoulder and back of the helmet shots. Again, both do a great job tying up their rights as this seems the weapon of choice for both fighters.

Draw in a spirited bout, but nothing significantly landed by either figher.

As the teams get set for a faceoff, Chris Nilan and Scott Mellanby shed the mitts and get in tight right off the bat. Nilan throws four rights and lands one and then they exchange very briefly. Mellanby lands two rights as Nilan throws two rights and connects with one. They separate a little bit and Nilan misses four rights then loses his balance. Mellanby forces Nilan's head down but then lets go and switches hands. Nilan gets up and misses a right while Mellanby misses two lefts. Then they get in tight and wrestle, Mellanby switches hands. Mellanby throws four rights and lands one as they wrestle. Nilan then throws three rights and connects wtih one then Mellanby misses three rights. They wrestle and then the referees move in and split them apart. Good fight, they were active and trading nicely but not a whole lot connected. I thought it was a pretty close scrap, I call it a draw.

Scott Mellanby narrow win Fun

This was a good scrap between the veteran Nilan and the rookie Mellanby. They drop the gloves before the pucks even dropped at the faceoff, and they go shot for shot. Nilan got clocked early by one of Mellanby's rights and seemed to take him by surprise a little. Mellanby gets him down to his knees but lets him back up again, where it looks like Nilan just wants to hang on and keep Scott's arms tied up. It proves ineffective and Mellanby lands some more, so Nilan goes back on the offensive himself and lands some shots of his own before the linesmen jump in. Very good scrap, but I'd give Mellanby the narrow win. He landed some good shots and Nilan looked caught off guard and didn't seem to fully recover.

Mellanby did surprisingly well here, but I think it was a draw.

Chris Nilan VS Scott Mellanby January 9th / 1988

Chris Nilan and Scott Mellanby are lined up at the draw and are chatting with one another before the puck is dropped. The ref drops the puck and the gloves are off very quickly and they are already locked onto one another. Nilan starts out at the beginning throwing some big right hands to Mellanby who then comes back and gets himself into a position where he as well throws some great right hands at Nilan. Nilan then answers back and throws some more right hands including some body shots. Nilan then starts to look a bit exhausted and Mellanby and Nilan both exchange some more right hands before the fight is over.

Good fight especially for Mellanby.

Draw.

Chris Nilan clear win Fun

I see that everybody here was persuaded by announcer Don Cherry & even the other Flyer announcers since they said that Mellanby "held his own" in this fight. The only thing Mellanby did well was to absorb facialpunches very well and that's where the compliments for Mellanby should end. Mellanby swung but he never facially connected on Nilan since Nilan used his usual defensive tactic of hiding his face periodically whenever Mellanby tried to swing. Mellanby only landed a few helmetpunches but I don't count helmetpunches unless they show some type of pain to the recipient. In the meanwhile, Nilan landed the only facialpunches of the fight. In fact, he landed about 3 facialpunches periodically. Clear win for Nilan.

Corson hits Smyth and they start going. They both throw some rights at the beginning but nothing big lands. Corson's helmet gets knocked off. They get in tight and it turns into a wrestling match along the boards and the linesmen eventually jump in.

By the boards, the whistle blows when we see from faraway, Corson & Smyth entangled and looping swings. Camera zooms in a bit and we see Corson land 2 facialpunches, followed by Smyth landing 2 headpunches. Smyth then lands a short negligible helmetpunch. Then the refs move in. Draw.

Happened at the same time with Smyth-Corson, from what I saw this one looked like a wrestling match.

Nilan caught Brown early on with a beautiful right and moments later followed it up with another nice right. Although Nilan landed the best punch it was Brown who was the more active fighter, throwing some left bombs that mostly landed on the helmet of Nilan.

Long fight. Niland landed one or two real nice rights but Brown was much more active, throwing quite a few lefts, landing a few although doing no damage to Nilan.

Chris Nilan narrow win Fun

They drop the gloves during play and quickly started swinging. Nilan lands 2 facialpunches to begin the fight. Brown then may have landed 1 facialpunch out of the 2 or 3 swings that he took because Nilan was using his defensive tactic of hiding his face whenever his opponent tried swinging. After this, Nilan was periodically landing facialpunches while he was tying up the arm of Brown. So Nilan lands at least 3 more facialpunches while Brown gets to land 1 more facialpunch plus a few helmetpunches ... the Flyer's announcers even admitted that Brown landed mainly to the back of the head but this is while Nilan kept his helmet on throughout the bout. Refs then move in. Technically, a narrow win by Nilan because Nilan did well in this match by landing clear facialpunches while even though Brown was actively swinging, many of Brown's swings never facially connected.
