| Berube starts the fight with a combination of right punches to the body and the face while Nilan throws a single right at Berube. Both guys are effective in tying up the arms. Both Nilan and Berube tries to find a better position. Berube tries a right while Nilan still has trouble getting his right hand free. They still tie each other up effectively, Nilan being blocked to throw that right hand, despite several attempts. Berube misses a big swooping right that grazes Nilan's helmet. Nilan then lands the best punch of the fight, a nice left hook that catches Berube in the face, immediately followed up by another good left. These punches drives Berube backwards, while he tries an uppercut. Berube then attempts to throw a big right at Nilan, but his arm is blocked well by Nilan. Nilan, known to watch fight tapes in order to study his opponents was good at tying up the arms of his opponents, limiting their effectiveness. The linesmen comes in and Nilan say something to Berube who is on his way to throw a right punch at Nilan. As Berube is led away from Nilan he throws his helmet to the ice in disgust. Nilan landed the best punch but Berube was the more active one. Close fight. |

| Grapplefest. Berube landed one right to the back of Nilan's helmet. Nilan got in one good left to the face of Berube. Those were basically the only punches that landed and Nilan definitely landed the best punch, edge Nilan. |

| The Rangers finally bring in new muscle (Paterson & Nilan) prior to this game because they were being decimated in fights by even the weaker teams in the first-half of the season. By the boards, these two guys hook up. Berube lands 2 marginal facial-punches followed by a pause where they only grapple. Then Berube swings once but he misses with his hand falling harmlessly on Nilan's helmet. Then Nilan surprises with a huge uppercut that earthquakes Berube & the crowd. This was followed by 1 possible marginal facial-punch by Berube and then the fight ends. Berube then crys to the ref about something, obviously embarrassed by that big-time punch by Nilan. Draw. |

  BattleshipRules 2103 fight reviews Jan 27 19:28 ET | Joe Paterson clear win | Fun 6 |
Fotiu was nearing the end of the line, but he still took on tough customers. Paterson was a good fighter and was starting to approach his fighting prime. The bout was competitive in the early going. Joe landed four right hands in close, but they were delivered without much power. Nick went with a series of right hands. He landed a partial connect, missed a punch, and landed a pretty good right.
Fotiu continued firing away with rights. He missed with a couple of attempts. Paterson landed a decent shot, missed a couple of punches, and landed another decent blow. Nick landed a solid right and a decent shot. Joe landed a good right hand and this was the turning point in the fight.
Paterson followed up and landed two solid punches. Fotiu clinched and Joe did a little hair pulling. Nick missed a right hand. Paterson completely wrapped up the right. Joe started to land a number of rights to the side and back of Nick's head. He landed three decent shots and a body blow. Then, he landed twelve consecutive punches. Most of the blows were decent, although a couple were of the more solid variety. The refs stopped the fight with Fotiu taking a series of unanswered punches.
This was a clear win for Paterson. It was close to being a decisive verdict. I consider it a clear win because Nick landed a few effective shots early in the fray. He was taking shots at the end, but they were not debilitating types of punches. He was holding on and some of the power of Paterson's blows were somewhat mitigated.
This was the sad finale for Fotiu. He went out with a whimper. He was one of the best fighters of his era. It is ironic that he was with the Flyers in this bout and was getting beaten up by a Ranger. Nick changed the balance of power some when he joined the Rangers and his best performance came in a historic win over the great Behn Wilson.
Fotiu could not completely bridge the gap and bring the Rangers on par with the Flyers. However, he became known as the guy who stood up to the Broad Street Bullies. He won early bouts over Wilson and Paul Holmgren. He gave some respectability to the Rangers from a physical standpoint. Nick gave the fans in the Big Apple something to cheer about when he pounded some guys, especially Flyers.
"Nicky Boy" was a born and bred New Yorker. He brought a great work ethic and perseverence from Staten Island. He used to take a ferry to the mainland to practice and the commute took up several hours of the day. He got the most of a limited skill base. He was a memorable guy who was always popular wherever he went. He brought effort and intensity at all times. He often brought the pain as well to NHL enforcers. |

| The New York Rangers' Joe Paterson meets up with Nick Fotiu from the rival Philadelphia Flyers along the boards and they drop them there. The fight lasts a half minute and they're in fairly close to one another the entire time. The early portion of the fight is an intense exchange of punches, Fotiu throwing thirteen rights and Paterson throwing seventeen. Paterson connects on tweleve, two of those landing nicely. Fotiu meanwhile, connects on seven with three landing nicely. Then they wrestle around in the middle stage of the fight and Paterson pulls Fotiu's hair. Paterson switches hands and lands three lefts as Fotiu throws three rights and lands two. Then in the late part of the fight, Paterson switches hands and gets Fotiu locked out with a strong hold of his right with the left. Paterson throws sixteen consecutive rights, connecting on every single one. The officials then jump in and pry the two heavyweights apart. Fotiu was bleeding a little bit from his nose. Paterson gets the big win in this scrap, landing far more than Fotiu and better too while also defending against him well. |

End of the line boys.
Fotiu's last career fight here, and he goes down losing to the logo he once ruled for so long. |

| Definitely a clear win for Paterson but let me explain first. The first half of the bout saw Paterson & Fotiu trading many consecutive facial-punches: 8 punches by Paterson and 5 by Fotiu ... while one of the punches by Paterson was a bomb that jolted Fotiu's head backwards big-time. Then the second-half of the fight saw Paterson throw 17 punches that connected mostly on Fotiu's head ( a couple of swings were facial-punches here). This was the first time in my life that i sensed that the fearless Fotiu actually cringed against another fighter because he subtly held on for dear life during the whole second-half of the bout. The refs then stopped the fight. This fight spelled the end of Fotiu's career. |

| Patterson pushes Fotiu against the boards and the drop the gloves... Fotiu gets a shot or two in... Patterson ties Fotiu up and then hits him with four or so light punches. Fotiu's heart was no longer in fighting, he is going trough the motions as the former champ.... but the fire is not there any longer. Win for Joe Patterson. |

Buffalogotcheated99 Apr 2, 2011 18:01 ET | | Definitely a clear win for paterson but let me explain first. The first 10 seconds of the fight, i'll just say it was a draw with punches connecting here & there,, but then the bulk of the fight saw paterson throw about a hundred punches that connected, although the punches mainly landed on fotiu's head. This was the first time in my life that i sensed that the fearless fotiu actually cringed against another fighter because he kind of held on for dear life. This fight spelled the end of fotiu's career. Reply

| Thanks for your comment. I always kept on eye on the good fighters of the league whenever they met a match that began spelling their "over-the-hill" status. I remember always being a fan of the good-guy Bobby Nystrom and his many conquests, and then I noticed a fight very late in his career that probably made him mull retirement > that was against glen cochrane in march of 1984. Nystrom acted like a different guy ever since that fight because he never avenged that embarassing loss and never took on the heaveyweights the next season & a half before actually retiring. ////////// The same thing happened with other guys like kevin mcclelland because if you look at their fight-history late in their career> you'll see a key fight that was embarassing enough to make them think "its time to hang the skates up". | Reply |

He took a beating, but went down swinging. I never really thought about Nystrom taking IT easy at the end of his career. After you pointed It out It made me think and when I checked his card the Cochrane loss made sense of It all. Gives me an idea for a thread tom.. thanks
In the Paterson/Fotiu fight
Fotiu started throwing them for about 10 sec then Paterson played a drum solo on his head. If I ever reviewed Fotiu's fights I would be unbiased, but I don't that will be anytime soon..well....maybe this one lol. | Reply |
