Brad May has a penalty and Boston is trying to score on the PowerPlay. One of the Bruins sends the puck out near the blueline to defenceman Ray Bourque. Bourque misses it however and it goes a little bit away from him. Bourque is watching the puck and he begins to skate toward it. However Brad May has left the penalty box and he races toward Bourque who has no idea he is coming. May catches the unsuspecting Bourque with a heavy hit sending Bourque down to the ice.

The hit itself was clean but the fact that Bourque was nowhere near the puck makes it a cheapshot. May clearly lined up Bourque and had him in his sights and couldn't wait for Bourque to reach the puck. I'm surprised an interference penalty wasn't called here.

I may be totally incorrect here, but I thought that this hit by May on Bourque was in the playoffs. Am I mistaken?Reply

On my Buffalo Sabres 91-92 fight tape, this event takes place between the other fights in this game. The tape goes in order from the beginning of the season to the end so I believe this hit happened in this game.Reply

You're right. I just watched the clip, and the late Ted Darling is the announcer. It was halfway through the 91-92 season that Ted left his position to battle Parkinson's.Reply

Fight called Unfair by oldtimegoodtime on Nov 5, 2006
Reason: Chris Nilan never intended to fight back
 Fun

Play is whistled down in the Boston end. As the players are skating up the ice Gord Donnelly decides to go after Chris Nilan. Donnelly grabs the unsuspecting Nilan and they both go to the ice, with Nilan covering up. The officials are in there immediately but another fight breaks out between Rob Ray and Stephane Quintal.

Decisive win for Donnelly as Nilan had to be rescued by the linesmen.

Draw Fun

These two meet up while the officials are busy with Donnelly and Nilan and the gloves come off. Ray tries to remove Quintal's helmet but he is unable to as Quintal wrestles Ray up against the boards. They do some wrestling and Quintal eventually works in a short right. Ray throws three rights landing two of them to the side of Quintal's head. Quintal and Ray go to the ice but they get back up. Quintal has lost his helmet and has his jersey pulled off. The two successfully tie each other up and neither one is able to get any more punches in although both of them try to. The linesmen see them grappling and get between them.

The two landed an even amount making this a draw.

Gord Donnelly jumps Chris Nilan and the officials jump right in. As players gather round, Rob Ray pairs off with Stephane Quintal and they shed the mitts. They keep in tight and Quintal presses Ray against the boards while Ray tries but fails to take off Quintal's helmet. Ray then throws three small rights and lands one before Quintal uprights himself and lands two rights. Ray gets off the boards then and throws three rights back, landing two which get Quintal down. Ray misses a right, knocks Quintal's helmet off, and then pulls his jersey off before he gets back up. Ray misses a left while Quintal reaches his skates and they stand back from one another then. Quintal misses a right followed by Ray missing a right. Quintal then misses two rights as his arm is caught up in his jersey and Ray keeps a hold of the jersey as it's still on Quintal's arms. Ray misses a right and then Quintal misses a right afterwards and they allow the linesmen to get in as they just wait and talk to each other. Not much going in this fight. Draw as they landed similar amounts and neither guy landed much well. Rather dull fight.

Rob Ray has been playing a physical shift and is antagonizing the Bruins. Chris Nilan hits the ice and wastes no time going after Ray. Nilan jumps Ray from behind which causes Jay Wells to try and get between them. Wells is unable to but Ray is able to get rid of his gloves and Ray grabs Nilan by the legs taking him to the ice.

This fight is a draw as the two fell before anything happened.

Chris Nilan goes right after Rob Ray at centre ice, jumping him from behind and tackling him to the ice. Nilan gets up and misses a right as Jay Wells comes in to help out Ray who grabs onto Nilan's legs and takes him down. Other players converge on the scene and pair off while the linesmen hurry in and break apart Nilan and Ray. Very poor fight and a draw.

I think the unfair call could be canceled. Rob Ray clearly drops his gloves and wrestles Chris Nilan down before the linesmen come in.Reply

meggamen, your tko call is wrong because according to the rules of this DYG website, a tko occurs when a facial-punch or even a head-punch (no helmet) drops the victim straightdown to the ice. This ray-nilan fight is actually just a wrestling match ... so i would call this a simple draw.Reply

He doesn't have an understanding of the rules such as what a tko actually is or what a ko is. He thinks a wrestling-bear hug & slippage to the ice is a tko. Better off telling No. 7 about his mistakes.

i know we have butted heads in the past but at least it was over debateable stuff. some of his reviews are ludicrous. i think it's really Nilan himself. he's lost a lot of respect in hockey due to sevral incidents.

i think he need mental health help.
