Nov 26, 2009 09:59 ET | Dave Brown clear win | Fun 8 |
Edmonton's Dave Brown is looking for a piece of Calgary's Stu Grimson here. In their previous game, the two towering titans tangled twice (nifty bit of alliteration there, no?). The rookie Grimson did very well against Brown in their second battle, and the veteran heavyweight was looking to even the score on this night. Brown would do more than even the score in this third battle.
Off a faceoff, Brown and Grimson immediately drop the gloves and go at it. Brown has his left hand totally free and clear, and this is bad news for Grimson. The big windmill is going, and Brown cranks Grimson with a series of wicked left hands. Grimson throws one punch to the back of the head, but it doesn't even slow Dave down.
Grimson tries to stop Brown's left by grabbing onto his arm, but Dave easily twists his arm free of Stu's grip and continues to throw big lefts, overhands and uppercuts. Brown lands another series of nasty left hands, most of them connecting hard on Grimson's face. Grimson desperately throws a big left hand of his own, but he misses it cleanly.
Grimson and Brown grab on and spin around for a second, and then Stu ends up falling over backwards and pulling Brown down with him. The officials then step in.
Brown, with his usual dead-eyed expression, inspects the knuckles of his left hand, then glares at the Calgary bench. He heads to the penalty box. Grimson heads to the penalty box, too, but wouldn't remain there for long. Later, it would be learned that Stu suffered multiple fractures in his right cheekbone and orbital bone. Grimson would require surgery and had some pins inserted in his face to help the bones mend.
Normally, this would be a decisive win for Brown, but Grimson stayed in the fight for the duration, despite taking some brutal punishment. This was a clear win for Dave Brown, who schooled the young Stu Grimson. It was definitely the worst beating of Grimson's career. |

| This is tricky. Grimson seemed to have no answer, except for one noogy and one right, for the series of jackhammer lefts Brown never stopped throwing. You'd want to call it decisive, almost a TKO, except that as EddieShore points out (see above), Grimson isn't finished until the self-defeating takedown. They get started just inside the Calgary blueline, Dave Brown throwing six consecutive and accurate lefts with #2 through #6 connecting well to The Grim Reaper's face; Grimson replies with a right-handed noogie, and then tries to grab Brown by the scruff of the neck. They spin about 180 degrees as Brown neatly, expertly, and powerfully wrist-locks Grimson's right hand away, and resumes the jackhammer lefts. The fifth or sixth punch of this series (11th or 12th overall) is likely to be the one that fractured Grimson's cheekbone, after which Grimson finally gets off a big right that misses completely; they both "circle the drain" until Grimson pulls Brown down atop himself. Brown looks over his left-hand knuckles, which probably needed loads of ice, almost as much, maybe, as Grimson's puss. |

| Right off a draw, Stu Grimson and Dave Brown, two heavyweights drop the gloves. Right away Brown gets his left hand loose and throws six times and lands five as Grimson just holds on. They grapple and as they do Grimson fails to take off Brown's helmet. Brown throws eight more lefts and connects with six of them as Grimson hangs on. Then Grimson lands a left and wraps his arms around Brown. Grimson gets the takedown, finishing the fight. All Brown here, he dominated Grimson. |

| Brown laid a beating on Grimson and nailed him with some really heavy shots. But in all fairness, Grimson wasn't in a hopeless situation or saved by the refs so I can't call it decisive. |

Jan 5, 2006 10:17 ET | Grimson missed part of the 1989-90 season with a broken cheekbone, suffered in this fight with Dave Brown. It was his final NHL game of the season before he was sent back to the minors. | Reply |

Mar 8, 2009 11:04 ET | Joonibal is incorrect in calling this a TKO. It was a one-sided win for Brown, but Grimson was not dropped. | Reply |
