After a stoppage in play some players gathers and Cullen takes a shot at one of the Rangers.
Dionne of all players takes exception and drops the gloves with Cullen.
One of the linesmen separated the two before any punches was thrown.

In tight fight along the boards, not a great fight. Both landed some shots to the helmet, Nilan landed better/harder punches. At the end Nilan went down, but it's really hard to see from the camera angle I saw if he actually went down from a punch. Could be a narrow win for Nilan or even a knockdown win for Loney but I'll go with a draw now until I maybe see a better angle.

Horrible cheapshot by Shaw, Lemieux was down for a while as Shaw's slash got him right in the throat. Shaw deserved every game of the 12 game suspension and more. Downie gets 25 games for charging but Shaw slashes Lemieux in the throat and only gets 12 games. What a joke the NHL has become. The Penguins bench tried to get after Shaw as he was being escorted out and almost caused a bench clearer. Emotion

David Shaw gets his stick up while checking Mario Lemieux against the boards and hits him in the face. Lemieux puts a hand to his face but is uninjured and stays in the play. After putting a slapshot on net, Lemieux goes to Shaw and gives him a crosscheck in the arm. Shaw retaliates with a two-handed slash at Lemieux which connects to the neck. Lemieux is splayed to the ice instantly and play is called down. Dan Quinn goes in after Shaw who drops his gloves. Lemieux was down on the ice for a while and was attended to by a trainer who looks at Lemieux's neck. Lemieux was fine and made his way off the ice by himself. Shaw was suspended by the league twelve games for his hack on Lemieux. Emotion

David Shaw decisive win
Fight called Unfair by oldtimegoodtime on Jun 22, 2006
Reason: Dan Quinn never intended to fight back
 Fun
2
After David Shaw slashed Mario Lemieux in the neck, Dan Quinn goes after Shaw. Shaw drops his gloves and squares off but Quinn just keeps his stick up and jabs it at Shaw. Shaw grabs at the stick but Quinn pulls it away. The linesmen get between them but Shaw wants a piece of Quinn and gets past the the linesmen to him. Quinn lowers his stick and gets his hands up as Shaw flails away, throwing two rights and landing one. Then Quinn turns, goes down to the ice, and covers up as Shaw lands on top. The linesmen then come in and break them up and Shaw is escorted to the dressing room. The Pittsburgh Penguins' bench is right near the hallway leading to the dressing room though and many players move down the bench, trying to get at Shaw. Some players get their sticks up, including the New York Rangers' Brian Bellows who tries to get after the Penguins on the bench. Bellows is then grabbed by a teammate on the bench and pulled back while a linesman enters the hallway to try and gain control over the Pittsburgh players, including Randy Cunneyworth, Dan Frawley, Rod Buskas, Steve Dykstra, and Phil Bourque. Things are eventually settled down and Shaw is lead off the ice without anything happening.

After Shaw slashes Lemieux, he immediately drops his gloves waiting for someone to go after him. Quinn is the one who goes after Shaw but instead of fighting him, he spears Shaw and then turtles like a pussy when Shaw goes after him. Embarrassing showing by Quinn.

The third period between the Penguins and Rangers got ugly. The Rangers had a big lead in this game and the Penguins tried to send a physical message. John Cullen shoved a player during a stoppage five seconds in the period. Little Marcel Dionne, a finesse superstar, decided to drop the gloves. Marcel only had a handful of fights his whole career and this must have shocked everyone in the arena. The officials quickly stepped in and prevented the fight from taking place. You know things are getting out of control when a guy like Dionne gets upset.

This was an ominous beginning to an ugly third period. Troy Loney fought Chris Nilan and Mark Kachowski fought James Patrick a few minutes later. The lid flew off of this one when David Shaw had an altercation with the superstar Mario Lemieux at 43:41. The two engaged in some pushing and shoving and mild stick work. Shaw responded with a vicious two-handed slash to Mario's neck. Dan Quinn intervened, but he was not intending to fight and he got hammered by Shaw.

Shaw was done for the night, but the Penguins were not satisfied. There was going to be some more retribution on the ice. Surprisingly, things settled down for awhile. Things got ugly again when Bob Errey gave Marcel Dionne a hard cross-check in the back after his teammate scored a goal. The Penguins were frustrated now that they were losing 9-2 in the game. They also saw a vicious hit on Lemieux where there was not appropriate retaliation. With the game out of reach, Pittsburgh was in a fighting mood.

Tempers flared after Dionne got drilled. Marcel got up and approached Errey. An official was keeping Dionne away from his assailant. Ulf Dahlen went after Errey for some payback. Brian Mullen tried to intervene as well. Rod Buskas had drilled Mullen with a cross-check for payback after the goal. The Rangers were upset with the hits, but the Penguins were fired up as well because of the lingering anger for what happened to Lemieux earlier in the game.

Phil Bourque got involved trying to bail out Errey. Marcel Dionne also had a hold of Errey. He turned around and started throwing punches at Bourque. He missed with a couple of weak left hands as a crowd of players got involved. Dahlen started trading with Errey. Both guys got a couple of marginal punches in. Ulf seemed to land with a little better pop. Dahlen turned for a time to throw a couple of grazing punches at Rod Buskas. Buskas was wrestling with Mullen at the time. Brian Leetch grabbed Errey from behind. Dahlen was able to take advantage of the two-on-one situation and he landed a pretty good uppercut on Bob.

The players were all separated after this. The penalties were being handed out. Errey tried to go after Dahlen one more time, but was prevented from doing so. Bob was finally forced to go to the dressing room. The wild melee was over. No one was really hurt in the fracas. Dahlen landed a couple of pretty good shots. It was mostly a lot of vigorous pushing and shoving. Things were not over. There was one more line brawl between the clubs before the end of the game.

What was of the greatest interest for me in this mini-brawl was seeing Marcel Dionne upset. Dionne was a classy finesse player who did not get rattled much. He was in a rare fighting mood. He wanted to go with John Cullen earlier in the period. He tried in vain to get at Errey. He tried to land a couple of left hands on Phil Bourque. Dionne looked like he wanted to ask permission before he could fight. He was out of his element here. He looked like he thought he would have to take off his kid gloves and slap his opponent before a fight could take place. This was a hilarious scene to witness.

Dionne was one of the greatest centers who ever lived. He was a small guy who had great speed, stick-handling ability, and puck control. He was a one-man offensive juggernaut in his prime. He had talented linemates on the Triple Crown Line, but Marcel generated the offense and stole the show. Dionne could not fight a lick, but he showed toughness in taking the body. Marcel survived and thrived during the harsh conditions on the ice during the fight-filled 1970's and 1980's. He is one of the most underrated players in the history of the NHL. It was fun to watch him attempt to get a pound of flesh in this game.

Some punches were thrown in a scrum, but not really much of a fight between these two. Dahlen wanted Errey, but linesman grabbed Errey before they could go. Dahlen threw punches at two or three different Penguins in a scrum, with Errey being one of them.

Yeah as posted in the message, these two never fought here. Buskas tried to fight Dahlen, but Mullen grabbed Buskas from behind in a scrum. Couple punches were thrown between them so if anything it should be Dahlen vs Buskas. Leetch never even grabbed Buskas in this one, he grabbed Bourque I think and then the Pens goalie who also was in the mix. But Leetch never threw any punches so I have no clue why he got a major.

The third period has been a heated one with a couple fights taking place before David Shaw gave Pittsburgh Penguins' superstar, Mario Lemieux a two-handed slash. There wass some more rough stuff later in the period and then with just a couple minutes left in the game, Chris Nilan and Troy Loney come together during a stoppage in play. The two had fought earlier and want a rematch but as they drop their gloves, the linesmen keep them separated and don't let them fight. Some players gather around and soon a fight starts between Randy Hillier and Michel Petit. They have an eventful scrap which ends when Petit drops Hillier with a right hand. A linesman quickly corrals Petit but Jim Johnson also jumps in after Petit, followed closely by Kelly Kisio. The linesman works to keep Hillier and Petit apart as Hillier gets to his skates and wants to continue while Kisio wrestles Johnson away and keeps him down on the ice. Meanwhile Loney and Nilan still want to go at it but a linesman stays with Nilan and tries to get Loney to move away. Nilan has some words for Loney though and they travel towards each other. The linesman then lets Nilan go and he engages Loney. Loney and Nilan have a lengthy tilt in close quarters mostly along the boards. Neither man gets going much in the fight which ends with a takedown by Nilan. The linesmen then get to breaking them up while the last two players on the ice, Randy Cunneyworth and Ron Greschner decide to have a go too. They shed the mitts and get away from a linesman while squaring off. They're fight is in tight and a pretty even battle with both guys getting in some punches before the linesmen jump in and split them up. Great brawl between these two Patrick Division rivals. Fun

Michel Petit win by TKO Fun

Chris Nilan and Troy Loney drop the gloves after bumping into each other during a stoppage in play but the linesmen keep them away from each other. Other players come around them and soon Randy Hillier and Michel Petit drop the gloves. They squareoff for a bit and then Hillier throws two rights, landing one as Petit moves in and grabs on. Hillier flails away and eventually grabs hold of Petit who throws seven rights and lands three while Hillier puts his head down and misses two lefts as well as one right. Hillier then gets bent over and turned around as he's pushed against the net by Petit. Petit throws four more rights and lands three to the back of the head as Hillier's helmet falls off. They wrestle and move away from the net and to the endboards where Hillier gets his head and pulls Petit's head down. Hillier lands a right and then throws three lefts, landing two that knock off Petit's helmet. Petit then raises his head up after Hillier misses a right and then throws three rights, landing two that flatten Hillier after he misses two lefts. Petit stands over Hillier and throws two last rights, landing one before being grabbed by a linesman. Jim Johnson then comes in after Petit but is pursued by Kelly Kisio. Johnson trips over Petit and is grabbed by Kisio who then ends up wrestling Johnson to the ice while Hillier gets up and tries to get back at Petit. The linesman stays between them though and the two are broken up and sent off the ice. Good fight. TKO Petit.

After Randy Hillier is dropped by Michel Petit to end their fight, Jim Johnson comes rushing in to help his teammate. Johnson trips over Petit as he falls onto Hillier and then Kelly Kisio comes in from behind and jumps over Petit to grab Johnson. Johnson gets loose momentarily and tries getting to Petit while Hillier gets up and likewise wants a piece of Petit. Kisio gets behind Johnson though and wrestles him to the ice. Kisio rolls on top of Johnson and keeps him down on the ice. Johnson attempts to get up but Kisio maintains his strong grip around Johnson's head and arm. I don't know if there was any intent to fight by either man here. The intent seemed to be more about getting at Michel Petit (for Jim Johnson) and keeping Johnson away from Petit (Kelly Kisio).

I think a rough is more suitable.

Troy Loney narrow win Fun

These two started the scrum in the beginning because Loney wants a piece of any Ranger for Shaw's cheap shot. The entire time their teammates are fighting these two are squaring off with the linesman stopping them from fighting, finally the other fights get broken up and the refs let them go. Nilan comes in with a bearhug, Nilan starts throwing rights that hit Loney's shoulder, Loney lands some rabbit punch rights that knock off Nilan's helmet, Nilan throws a few more rights doing nothing and Loney lands a few more rabbit punches, Loney lands a good uppercut to the ribs, followed by a rabbit punch to the shoulder. Loney then starts landing some rabbit lefts to the back of Nilan's head, Nilan just wants to wrestle and does as Loney tries to find a oppening, Loney puts Nilan in a headlock and lands a few short rights, Nilan gets out and throws 2 big rights that miss, Nilan then mixes uppercuts with overhand rights but only lands 1 uppercut, Nilan has a good grip on Loney's right so he can't throw, they hug for a bit as Loney tries to get his right loose and Nilan comes in with a good uppercut. Nilan tries to take Loney down but Loney has good balance and puts Nilan back in the headlock and lands a good right, Loney lands about 3 short rights as Nilan wrestles him around, Loney lands another good right and Nilan falls back and brings Loney down with him. I really don't see giving this fight to Nilan he threw less and landed a lot less. Loney picks up the win in this one.

The linesmen gestures for Loney to stay back but Nilan begins talking to Loney and they wade closer to each other. The linesman then lets Nilan go and he moves in and locks on with Loney. They wrestle in close and Nilan misses two rights while driving Loney into the boards. Loney misses two rights and then Nilan's helmet comes off. Nilan throws three rights and lands one as he has trouble reaching the larger Loney. Loney comes back with three rights of his own and lands two to the head. Nilan goes idle and they keep wrestling and Loney lands another right before landing two short lefts, then throws four more rights and lands one. Then Nilan lands long two rights and they move from the boards. Nilan throws four rights, landing one while Loney at the same time counters with two missing rights. They keep in close quarters and Loney lands two rights before Nilan throws two rights and lands one. Nilan and Loney then get back up against the boards and resume wrestling with Nilan going idle again while Loney throws six rights and lands one. Nilan then wrestles Loney backwards to the ice and the linesmen get in immediately to break it up. Long fight but not a great one, it was mostly wrestling in tight. An alright scrap though between these two heavyweights. Loney landed slightly more and better punches than Nilan and gets the edge.

Long fight but an average fight at best, lot of wrestling. Looked a lot like their first fight, in tight battle, Loney landed more but his punches looked weak, Nilan's punches looked harder though he didn't really land any good ones either. Finally they wrestled to the ice. I call it a draw just like their first fight in this game. Loney did well in his two fights with Nilan in this game I must say.

As the linesmen break up Chris Nilan and Troy Loney, the last two players on the ice for both teams, Randy Cunneyworth of the Pittsburgh Penguins and the New York Rangers' captain, Ron Greschner decide to drop the gloves too. A linesman tries to keep between them but they squareoff anyway and eventually come together. Cunneyworth misses a right and gets in tight on the bigger Greschner. Greschner connects on a right to the helmet and then they wrestle a little. Greschner throws two rights more and connects with another one to the helmet. Cunneyworth misses a right as Greschner misses a left and then Greschner misses a follow up left. They continue to wrestle and Greschner lands a right and a left to the helmet before Cunneyworth connects on a right to the helmet and then a left to the face. Cunneyworth connects with a left to the helmet afterwards and then misses a right before Greschner misses a right. They continue to wrestle and Cunneyworth throws two rights, connecting with one to the body before grabbing Greschner's pants. Cunneyworth is unable to unbalance Greschner though and then Greschner throws two rights, connecting with one to the helmet. After Cunneyworth misses a right, Greschner connects on a right to the helmet as Cunneyworth misses a left. Greschner goes to his knees and the linesmen get in and break it up. Not a bad fight in my opinion. They did a fair amount of wrestling but both guys were able to connect with some punches. It was a pretty even fight in my opinion, I'll go with a draw.

Ron Greschner narrow win Fun

After the Nilan-Loney fight these two talk for a bit with a ref between them and decide to go so the ref moves before someone gets hurt. Good fight with a lot of punches thrown and landed, to save a lot of time I will just say Greschner landed the better punches before they went to the ice.

Final fight in this fight filled game. Looked like a solid draw to me, both threw and landed pretty much the same.

Agree with the slight edge to Greschner. Based on the video, the funniest thing about this fight is the facial expressions of Carol Alt from the stands. You would think she never saw him fight before.Reply

Regular season. I'd wager that the 10/1/85 game with Philly dwarfs this one in terms of PIM.Reply
