Paiement and McPhee got tangled up behind the Nordiques net. Both men got the gloves up. Mike shoved Wilf in the face. The men decided to drop the mitts. McPhee landed a right hand to the body. Paiement missed a right hand. Mike tried to get another right hand off, but Wilf thwarted the effort. Paiement went for the takedown and hauled McPhee to the ice.

This was an uneventful draw. Mike landed the only punch and it did no damage. Paiement went for the takedown right away. This was a boring contest which was ironically the opening salvo in one of the most violent brawl-filled games of the 1980's.

This is a brief wrestling match by the end of which Paiement throws McPhee on the ice and the refs pounce. It's difficult to tell how much they really wanted to fight, but the dropping of the gloves looked good and the takedown is spectacular.

Hunter was trying to race to get a rebound on a Quebec shot that was stopped by goalie Steve Penney. He clipped Steve as he skated across the crease. Immediately, Jean Hamel and Chris Chelios went after Dale. An official was right there and no punches appeared to connect. There was some brief holding, shoving, and wrestling. Rick Green and Ryan Walter were secondary guys who got into the scrum.

This was a relatively uneventful scrum. Hunter was trying to go after the puck on a bang-bang play. The Canadiens players did not like him invading the crease area and clipping the goalie. They rallied and sent a message that such actions were not acceptable.

Hunter charged the net again after Penney made a save. This time Dale had time to stop, but he decided to barrel into defenseman Rick Green. Green bumped into Penney and the Canadiens players all came over to push and shove in the scrum. Green grabbed a hold of Hunter. An official was trying to separate the men right away. Chris Chelios gave Hunter a slash.

Mike McPhee was trying to get at Hunter. He made a motion to shove him, but Blake Wesley grabbed him and held him along the boards. The players were separated and the crowd was clearly agitated at this point. There were catcalls and boos at the Montreal Forum. There were no punches thrown, just some pushing and shoving. The players and crowd were losing their patience with the abrasive tactics of Hunter trying to disrupt Penney in the crease on multiple occasions.

Anton and Craig were shoving each other with the sticks up behind the net. Ludwig missed a left and connected with a solid right hand. Stastny missed a right and landed a solid blow. Anton was able to tie up Craig's right arm. Stastny landed a partial connect, a solid connect, and a decent blow before the refs broke up the fight.

I rate this as a narrow win for Stastny. Ludwig landed one solid right hand and got off to a good start. Anton quickly tied up his right hand and took control of the bout. He landed a few effective blows in the fight and earned the victory.

Ludwig catches Stasny unprepared with his first gloved punch. Stasny ducks the second punch, a right hook by Ludwig, and then manages to tie him up. In the following exchange, Stasny does very well, especially for a European player. As Ludwig misses with a big uppercut, Stasny starts throwing with his right hand. The first punch goes wide but the second gets Ludwig on the head and sends his helmet flying like a bullet. They then tie each other up and do some wrestling. As Stasny outmuscles his opponent, Ludwig crouches against the boards. Stasny starts going hard with his right and gets a good punch in. As it starts looking like Ludwig is in for some serious punishment, the refs move in and rescue him.

I was surprised by this fight. Ludwig, although an infrequent fighter, nevertheless, he was always looked at with respect by people in general. In this fight, he seemed to miss with a long-traveled uppercut. This is followed by grappling between the two guys but then Stastny shows some strength when he wrestles Ludwig in a way that gives him leverage so that he lands at least 2 facial-punches on Ludwig (out of 4 swings thrown) ... and these are the final punches of the match just before the zebras intervene. Narrow to clear win win for Anton Stastny.

From watching the replay of the beginning of the brawl, it is apparent that Dale Hunter got into a scrap with Guy Carbonneau right as the period ended. Hunter had knocked Carbonneau over and was directly behind him as both men were on the ice in front of the Montreal netminder.

Hunter gave Carbonneau a facewash right as the buzzer sounded to end the period. Guy threw an elbow backwards, but it did not appear to do any damage. Dale got on top of Carbonneau and the two appeared to trade some punches on the ice. Guy threw a couple of short punches on the inside, while Dale threw a couple of downward blows.

I rate this as a draw. It did not appear that either man landed anything significant in the skirmish. It was apparent that both men were throwing short, choppy blows on the inside. It looks like there was an intent to fight by both men and that this should be regarded as more than a typical roughing incident.

This was the opening salvo of the actual Good Friday brawl. More specifically, it was the start of the first brawl. The benches emptied after Hunter and Carbonneau went at it. Dale had been a real pest in this game. There were a couple of times he caused trouble earlier in the game. He crashed the net on two occasions earlier in the game. Both times, this drew a response from Montreal players who were fiercely protective of their netminder. This was the third incident in front of the Canadiens net and was a motivating factor for why the benches emptied so quickly.

Hunter's timing could not have been more opportune to start this wild bench-clearing melee. It was at the end of the period, when guys were looking to head to the dressing rooms. There would be more than the required men on the ice to begin with. This harmless looking scrap started one of the most infamous bench-clearers in NHL history. It was like a guy who tossed a cigarette into the woods and it became a conflagration that engulfed an entire forest.

There was confusion as to Hunter's role in this brawl. He was seen being restrained on the bench along with Peter Stastny in the middle of the brawl. Apparently, both men were sent to the bench by the officials and they were restrained because of the serious consequences facing them if they came back on the ice to rejoin the brawl. Careful perusal of the footage reveals that it was Hunter who started the whole thing.

The Nordiques and Canadiens were battling fiercely in playoff action. Dale Hunter had been a pest all game. He crashed the net on a few different occasions and each time this drew a response by Montreal players. The horn sounded to end the second period. Hunter knocked over Guy Carbonneau. He gave Guy a vigorous facewash and the men started to grapple. Neither guy got an effective punch in, but the skirmish emptied both benches.

Trouble continued to escalate as Randy Moller grabbed Chris Chelios. He gave Chris a mild push. Chris Nilan approached Randy from the left side and dropped him with a sucker punch. He landed a good left hook. Moller got up quickly and got nailed with a couple more effective left hooks. At this point, other players intervened and tempers were heated. The full-scale brawl was on.

Richard Sevigny and Clint Malarchuk were tugging at each other vigorously. They became dance partners, but it did not appear that any effective punches landed between the two. Mike McPhee tried to pull a Nordique off a Canadien player. Blake Wesley in turn tried to pull McPhee out of the pile. Guy LaFleur got into the act, but he was trying to be a peacemaker. He was pulling Wesley out of the big pigpile.

Hunter was sent to the bench and was prevented from getting back into the action. Anton Stastny was next to him watching the brawl. Ironically, his brother Peter got into the next bout with Mario Tremblay. Mario landed a decent punch and a couple of solid right hands. He missed with a few rights and Peter went for the quick takedown.

Moller and Nilan went at it for the second time. Randy was bloody and was looking for some payback. An official was interfering at the start of their second bout. He gave up and let the men tire themselves out. Randy got a couple of right hands off, but nothing of significance landed. Nilan was content to hold him off. Chris established a lockdown grip on his right arm. This was an uneventful bout that ended in a standstill.

Mark Hunter had a brief bout with Louis Sleigher. Sleigher landed a decent right and missed a punch. Hunter was holding in tight and wrestled him to the ice. Malarchuk and Sevigny were still holding each other along the boards. Moller was trying to get back at Nilan, but an official escorted him away from the Nordique player.

The officials were able to get some of the players off the ice. Peter Stastny was seen on the footage going to the dressing room. Jean Hamel and Louis Sleigher were holding each other. An official was trying to break up the bout. Mario Tremblay was trying to convince Hamel to release his grip. Jean did release the grip, but Louis had his left hand free to throw a punch. His blow was disguised by being thrown behind the referee. The punch landed with destructive force and left Hamel in a bloody heap on the ice.

The demolition brought the brawl to a screeching halt for a time. The players stood around and saw the carnage. Bob Gainey went over to check on Hamel. A Montreal trainer was trying to revive him. Sleigher went right to the dressing room as the players looked stunned. After some time, most of the men went back towards center ice to join the sea of players. The camera went back to reveal that there was a small pool of blood on the ice next to the fallen Hamel.

Players slowly left the ice. Montreal players periodically stopped by to see how Jean was doing and to show support for their fallen teammate. Finally, the players headed to the dressing room. Hamel was down for several minutes. He finally got off the ice with the aid of the trainer and Guy Carbonneau.

This was the first of the two bench-clearing incidents in the Good Friday brawl. There were several skirmishes, but no classic bout. Nilan suckered Moller and put some hurt on him. Tremblay got a few effective shots in on Stastny. The ending of the brawl was as dramatic as it gets. Sleigher absolutely wrecked Hamel and did some serious damage. This was a chilling KO and a cheap shot that Jean never saw coming. The players needed some time to digest what they saw. They contemplated what response should be given and they went at it again in a second bench-clearing brawl.

Chris Nilan decisive win
Fight called Unfair by BattleshipRules on Apr 11, 2013
Reason: Randy Moller was jumped and could never fight back
 Fun
6
After the benches cleared, Moller held on to Chris Chelios. He gave Chelios a bit of a shove with his glove. Nilan came up behind Randy and dropped him with a left hook. Moller never saw the punch coming and it was a sucker job.

Moller got up, but Nilan continued to fire away. He missed a blow, landed a pretty good left hook, and landed a solid connect. A group on Nordiques players intervened at this time and temporarily ended the fight.

This was the first of two fights between Moller and Nilan during the brawl. These two went at it again later on in the brawl. The second one was not very eventful. Randy was bloodied and from the footage it appears that one of the blows in the first bout did the damage.

I rate this as a decisive win for Nilan. He suckered Moller and landed a couple more punches before Randy could respond in kind. The bout should be considered unfair because Moller never had a legitimate opportunity to defend himself. If Hunter started the fire, Nilan's attack on Randy was like dumping a can of lighter fluid on top of the flames.

Malarchuk and Sevigny grabbed each other after Nilan went after Moller. These two were dance partners for most of the brawl. It did not appear that any punches landed. These two were holding other each and keeping the other from getting free to intervene in other skirmishes. It looked like Sevigny was trying to get a hand free to do some punching at one point, but Clint wrapped up his arm effectively and no legitimate shots were fired during the televised footage.

This has to be regarded as a draw. Neither man landed a legitimate blow. These two were mostly holding each other throughout both brawls.

Tremblay was able to get several right hands off in the bout. Stastny was unable to get any punches off. Mario landed a solid blow, missed a punch, and landed a couple of decent connects. His remaining blows sailed over the back of Stastny.

Mario did not do a lot of damage with his punches, but he landed effectively enough to build up a lead in the early stages of the bout. Tremblay did all the punching in the contest before Stastny went for the takedown. Mario did enough to earn a narrow win.

A beating??? Beating, my ass.
If noogying a guy in the side of the helemt and then having him fall on top of you, all in the span of about 12 seconds is a "Beating" and a "Decisive win" then we need to go and remove the "narrow" wins from about 2,000 fights on here and change them to brutally decisive victories for the guy who landed the most noogies.
Ridiculous.
Tremblay gets a narrow win here because if helmets had feelings, Stastny's might have been a little hurt.

This was a brief skirmish that broke out while Malarchuk and Sevigny were holding each other and Nilan and Moller were involved in their second fight of the brawl. Sleigher had Hunter bent over. He delivered a decent right uppercut to the head. There was no follow up blows that connected. Hunter was holding and Louis had Mark in a headlock.

This fight was a draw. Sleigher landed one blow with decent pop. The shot did minimal damage and Louis was unable to follow up with any effective scoring blow. It may be that there were more punches thrown and landed, but the visual evidence only revealed that one punch connected. It was not much and was insufficient to give Sleigher the victory.

Moller and Nilan had a second bout and there was not much excitement here. Chris missed with a right hand and got temporarily wrapped up by an official. Moller landed a partial connect with a right hand.

The officials let the men go for awhile. Moller was bloodied, but this was probably from the effect of the blows Nilan got in during the first bout. Chris seemed to be exhausted. He was uncharacteristically passive the rest of the way. Randy was trying to get his right hand loose to do some punching. Nilan had the arm held away and this was the situation until the refs came in and separated the men.

I rate this second bout as a draw. Moller landed one marginal blow that was ineffective. It did not appear that Nilan landed any punches in the second bout. Chris looked exhausted and was pleased when the refs broke this one up.

Cowardly showing by Nilan here. Cheap shotting Moller when he was down on the ice, then wanted no part of him for some reason when they were squared up.

The more I see, the more I realize how overrated a "tough guy" Nilan was. He was a fraud.

Hamel and Sleigher were holding each other along the boards in the middle of the brawl. An official was trying to get the men to break it up. Mario Tremblay went over to Hamel and tried to get him to get away from Louis. Jean released his grip and Sleigher had his left hand free.

Louis uncorked a wicked left hand over the shoulder of the official. The punch landed directly on Hamel's eye and did tremendous structural damage. Jean was hurt badly and was on the ice for a long time. This was one of the most brutal KO's I've ever seen.

This was about as unfair as it gets. Sleigher threw a wicked sucker punch and the blow was thrown behind the official. It appeared that Hamel never saw it coming. He had relaxed a bit after agreeing to release his grip with the intention of ending the altercation. Louis landed one of the most destructive shots I've seen. Jean was completely debilitated at the end of this one.

The most serious event during the bench brawl. Sleigher throws a left that catches Hamel in an unlucky manner. It ended Hamel's career. The punch didn't look to dangerous but it turned out to do more damage than anyone could have thought.

This is the most prominent event during the first bench brawl between the two teams. As Trembley tries to separate Hamel from Sleigher, the latter throws a left that catches Hamel just over the right eye and shatters him to pieces. He collapses and is out for a long long time. When he does come to at last, they have to carry him to the dressing room and he spits blood.

During the brawl, Sleigher and Hamel are locked up next to the glass. Mario Tremblay intervenes to separate the two. As Sleigher pulls away from Hamel, he fires a devastating left over Tremblay that catches Hamel in the face sending him to the ice. He lie there motionless for several minutes while Sleigher heads off the ice to the dressing room, setting up the next brawl.

He injured the eye here.
And Hamel experienced more eye trauma not long after this event.
He was set to play for Montreal in 1984-85, but was hit in his left eye by a Ken Linseman clearing shot in Montreal's exhibition game against Boston on Oct. 4, 1984. He was hospitalized on the night of the injury and remained in the hospital for a week. The injury, which cost him 90 percent of the vision in his eye, required surgery and ended his career.

The players came out of the dressing room and were ready to go at it again. Many of the same players from the first brawl were on the ice. Wally Weir and Mike McPhee had the first bout of the second bench-clearer. Wally was actually squaring off against Mark Hunter when McPhee approached him from the right and challenged Weir.

Weir landed a couple of decent rights. McPhee missed with a couple of right hands. Wally missed a blow and landed a partially connecting left hook. The men toppled to the ice and the cameras moved on to the developing bout between Richard Sevigny and Dale Hunter. Clint Malarchuk grabbed Sevigny and the two were pushing and shoving. John Chabot went over to calm Hunter down and Dale gave him a shove to the chest.

The Canadiens were trying to get back at Loius Sleigher for his vicious sucker punch that destroyed Jean Hamel in the first brawl of the evening. Mark Hunter was trying to challenge Sleigher. An official stood between the two men. The announcers said that Hunter was trying to hit Louis with his stick. Upon closer examination, it was Sleigher who got his stick up and was waving it. Mark grabbed Sleigher's stick and tried to shove it into his face.

Tempers continued to flare as the situation was escalating to a fever pitch. Blake Wesley tried to grab Mark Hunter, but Ryan Walter grabbed him and held him at bay. Sevigny landed a partial connect on Dale Hunter. Hunter got him in a headlock and Malarchuk grabbed Richard again and was able to pull him off. Sevigny and Malarchuk held each other for quite awhile as in the first brawl.

The officials tried to calm the situation by escorting Sleigher off the ice. The group of players all went towards the side of the rink. Mark Hunter was trying to get at Sleigher. His brother Dale grabbed him and was trying to hold him up. Tremblay tackled Dale to the ice. Other players quickly joined in as the brawl continued to escalate.

Tremblay paid a price for his intervention. Andre Dore landed a good left hook. Dore continued to fire away. He landed a couple more effective left hands. Mario was busy trying to get at Dale. Andre landed a couple of decent right hands on Tremblay. Peter Stastny became the fourth-man-in in the altercation. He landed five right hands on Tremblay. These were effective punches and payback for the bout in the first brawl.

Larry Robinson tried to get in and rescue Tremblay. He was held off by Wilf Paiement. Instead, Guy LaFleur was able to grab Stastny and pull him away from the pile. Dale threw a few punches at Tremblay. It did not appear that he landed anything effective. Mark Hunter jumped on top of his brother to give Tremblay a break. The two brothers were grappling, but it did not look like any blows were swapped. The men were trying to get at each other at the conclusion of this wild brawl.

This was another exciting donneybrook. The Hunter brothers were at the forefront of the second brawl of the evening. Mark was trying desperately to go after Sleigher, but it did not look like he was able to exact any revenge. Dale tried to grab Mark and the two were trying to get in each other's way. Tremblay was the one who paid the biggest price in the second brawl. He took some good punches from Dore and Stastny.

This was the second exciting brawl of the evening. The excitement was palpable for both events. The Good Friday brawl was one of the most notorious brawls of the 1980's. This was an unforgettable night of mayhem and drama on the ice. This was the apex of the fierce Montreal-Quebec rivalry. The Nordiques may be gone from the NHL, but no one will ever forget what transpired on this evening.

The referee said there was so much chaos in between periods in their office they forgot to notify the teams of which players were ejected. He said he went back onto the ice for the start of the third and saw Nilan, Sleigher, etc. and was like "NOOOOOOOO!!!!". A couple of seconds later round II was on.

Wally Weir narrow win Fun

Weir was ready to square off with Mark Hunter. McPhee approached from his left and challenged him. Wally decided to be flexible and swap blows with Mike instead. Weir landed a couple of decent right hands. McPhee missed with a few right hand attempts. Wally landed a decent left hook and went for the takedown.

Weir and McPhee did some extended grappling on the ice. Wally threw a couple of left hands at him, but they were ineffective blows that were more like shoving his forearm in Mike's face. The refs separated the men with much difficulty.

This was the first scrap of the second brawl. It was a below average fight. Weir got in a few decent blows and I think he did enough to earn the victory. McPhee was not very accurate with his punches and was unable to land anything when the men were on the ice because Wally got on top of him.

Draw Fun
1
Sevigny wanted to go with Dale Hunter. Hunter was a marked man in this brawl and several Canadiens wanted a piece of him. Richard and Dale were at close quarters Sevigny landed a weak partially connecting left hook. Clint Malarchuk interfered immediately and pulled Richard away from Dale. These two would be holding and wrestling periodically through their second consecutive brawl.

This was the briefest of skirmishes. No effective blows landed in the scrap. Hunter did not throw any punches at Sevigny and was holding when Malarchuk came to interfere. This boring encounter was a clear draw.

Draw
Fight called Unfair by BattleshipRules on Apr 13, 2013
Reason: Too much interference by other players
 Fun
3
Tremblay tackled Hunter around the neck and it resembled a guy at a rodeo wrestling a steer. The technique was perfect for an event in the Saddledome. Mario missed a follow up blow.

As Tremblay was on top of Hunter, Andre Dore and Peter Stastny both got several effective punches in on a helpless opponent. Both men threw a few short blows on the inside. Nothing very effective appeared to connect. It looked like Hunter got a decent right hand in. He missed with a left hook. Chris Chelios grabbed Dale's jersey and this kept him from landing the left hand.

Mark Hunter came over and tackled his brother Dale. Andre Dore was trying to tie up Mark and no punches were thrown. Hunter and Tremblay were finally separated after much difficulty.

I rate this fight as a draw. It was difficult to determine how many punches landed in this fight with all of the player and official interference. It appeared that Hunter landed one decent right hand. However, the fight was clearly unfair as Dore and Stastny were hammering Tremblay during his bout with Hunter. Nothing really significant landed, so I think a draw is the right call.

They were brothers, and their older brother Dave also had a significant career in the NHL, especially with Edmonton.

All three of them were good players who started trouble and were cheap as fuck.

Dave was the "cleanest", relatively speaking. But he was still a dirty bastard compared to most.

Dale and Mark were damn near interchangeable as players. Solid skills with cut-throat, chickenshit tactics.

Andre Dore decisive win
Fight called Unfair by BattleshipRules on Apr 13, 2013
Reason: Mario Tremblay was jumped and could never fight back
 Fun
6
Dore jumped Tremblay from behind and landed a good left hook. Mario did not respond because he was grappling with Dale Hunter and trying to get some licks in. Andre continued to fire away on an opponent who was helpless to defend himself.

Dore landed a couple of decent lefts and a couple of solid blows. His next punch landed with decent pop in the upper back region. Peter Stastny took over from here. He was the fourth-man-in in the altercation and started to rain blows on Tremblay.

This was a decisive win for Dore. Tremblay did not appear to be badly hurt, but he was taking some solid punches. Mario was unable to defend himself and the situation was hopeless for him. His full concentration was on the bout with Hunter and he could not see the incoming blows. There is no doubt that this was an unfair contest.

Peter Stastny decisive win
Fight called Unfair by BattleshipRules on Apr 13, 2013
Reason: Peter Stastny suckered Mario Tremblay
 Fun
6
Stastny took advantage of Tremblay being down. He was not thrilled with Mario because Tremblay beat him in a fight in the first brawl. Peter threw five right hands on a helpless opponent. All of the punches appeared to land with pretty good pop. Stastny had a clear path to Mario's head and he was teeing off. Larry Robinson tried to grab him, but he was restrained by Wilf Paiement. Guy LaFleur was the man who pulled Stastny away from the pile.

This was a decisive win for Stastny. He was landing some good punches against a helpless opponent who never saw the blows coming at him. This was about as unfair as it gets. Tremblay took a lot of good punches in the second brawl of the evening.

Mark tackled Dale as he was trying to get left hands in on Tremblay. Chris Chelios was holding Dale off by the jersey and Mark took over in corraling his brother. It did not appear that the brothers threw punches at each other. There was some jostling underneath the pile, but I could not distinguish any distinct punching motion. As the men were separated, Mark and Dale were giving each other dirty looks. There was no damage done, but it was an entertaining scene of the Hunter boys grappling on the ice at the tail end of the second brawl. Fun
