Pat LaFontaine crosses the Rangers' blue line as he is trying to accept a pass from a teammate. LaFontaine is looking to his side as he tries to control the puck. Chris Nilan is trailing LaFontaine and trying to slow him down by hooking him from behind. But the real danger to LaFontaine is directly in front of him.

Rangers' defenseman James Patrick moves in directly at LaFontaine and drills him with an elbow to the head. The blow spins LaFontaine around and knocks him unconscious. LaFontaine bounces off of Nilan, who was behind him, and crumbles to the ice.

LaFontaine would remain unconscious for several minutes. Trainers and doctors scrambled onto the ice to tend to him. LaFontaine was then revived and assisted off the ice. He suffered a major concussion and would not return to this game.

This would lead to the Islanders going for revenge later in the game...

This started on what transpired later in the game. Patrick either elbowed or used his shoulder on LaFontaine, knocking him out. He lied there for like 5 mins. Fun

I just read this on Wikipedia, so I don't know if it's 100% accurate.

"The Islanders continued to struggle and in 1989, they missed the playoffs for the first time since 1974. In the first game of his next series, in 1990, LaFontaine suffered the first of many concussions, after a controversial, open-ice hit by James Patrick of the New York Rangers. He fell on his head and was unconscious while being taken off the ice on a stretcher.

Famously, his ambulance was delayed en route to the hospital by Ranger fans who tried to turn the ambulance over. He was lost for the remainder of the series."

Ranger fans tried to turn the ambulance over? That has to be the worst, most classless, and most utterly retarded fan behavior I've ever heard about. Has anyone else heard about this?

As a matter of fact, check this out. I just saw this today as a matter of fact:

http://www.thehockey...0-Craziest-fans.html

"Few barns in the world can boast fans as boisterous as those found on Broadway. They've mobbed opposition busses, kept ambulances with injured players from leaving and thrown batteries from the stands at their most hated players. It's not a nice place to play."

Guess who was ranked # 1? ;-)

Yeah, that definitely happened. Every fanbase has a certain amount of dipshits but that was above and beyond.

This is the Infamous Islanders 2 second line change. Good Brawl. Baumgartner was skating around in circles as if he's excited, just so he can get at steam and jump someone. Rangers are pussies for not fighting back. Al Arbour is amazing. Fun

If I remember this correctly, Arbour sent out the goons for an inconsequential final faceoff with only a couple of seconds left. This may have been in retaliation for something that happened earlier in the game. The Rangers (sensing what's coming) had no choice but to counter by taking the marquee guys off the ice. I think Arbour got fined by the League for this. If anyone can add to this, please do.Reply

Funny how fans litter the ice, and someone threw a hat so Vukota picked it up and wore it and I'm guessing he kept it too.Reply

Bloemberg doesn't even get his gloves off until Vukota has poured a half dozen punches on his melon. Vukota just continues the beating and when Bloemberg falls to the ice Vukota picks him back up so he can work him over a little more.

Vukota hammers him. Sam Rosen and John Davidson were really upset about this, calling Vukota a jerk and crying how bad this is for the game.

This one starts after the Vukota-Bloemberg pairoff and the camera only picks up parts of it. Early on it looked like Nylund had the upper hand throwing a left as Nilan was on his knees along the boards with the linesman trying to get in between. When the camera cuts back a little later Nilan is on top of Nylund and trying to throw punches while he's down. Players from both teams pile in. Hard to pick a winner based on the clip.

Ken Baumgartner decisive win Fun

Baumgartner tried to get King to go off the faceoff but they never really get it going until after the other two fights had started. King is really not interested in pursuing it at any point but Baumgartner forces the issue and drops the gloves, wrestles King down and fires a shot at him while he's on the ice. The camera cut back and forth between this one and the Nilan-Nylund scrap but it didn't appear as if King threw anything. He turtled when down on the ice and really just waited for the zebras to intervene.

King looked like a sissy in this one, Baumgartner was ragdolling him all over the ice and also landed only punches, King looked like he just wanted to run away from Baumgartner.

how can it be a decisive win when you don't see a single punch being thrown
If somebody turtled, it's an automatic Decisive win for his opponent, even if no punches were thrown.

King wasn't down turtling in the end, they were both standing when linesman separated them. Camera didn't show enough of this fight to make a call, they might have just wrestled when they were down or Baumgartner might have pummelled King, who knows. Baumgartner looked like the only guy interested though.Reply

Hey Mullet

The feed you saw was the MSG one, and thats the one that didn't showed the fight between these two. theres the other one with Jim Hughson and some other guy that clearly showed Baumgartner beating King.

this should be pulled, i've seen 3 different feeds of this brawl, both Rangers and Islanders feeds and the one that is posted here and these two never fought, they just had a hold of each other, they never even tried to throw any punches at each other, it should be a rough at best.Reply
